A superb review as always Matt. Such a lovely look machine. Certainly nice to see all the little details fitted around the buffer beams. Running looks amazing (minus the dirty track) Certainly perfect for shunting and dock side running. Giving me ideas now for Compton Quay ;) Keep up the superb work and thanks for sharing!

Little gem of a loco, smooth little runner, and little different to normal, very nice

Thanks so much man! Used to run where I live at Weymouth Quay, it is truly my favorite loco.

The bell was included because the loco used on the Weymouth tramway carried a bell to warn traffic and pedestrians of its approach along the harbour wall to the boat trains. I remember it well.

Good Evening Matt,

That's is a fantastic review of the Heljan Great Western 1366 Pannier Tank, I love the detail and the running performance.

The bell that came with the locomotive, the 1366 Pannier Tanks in real life had bells when they had worked on the Weymouth Harbour Tramway in the Southern Region.

I think they use the bells aswell as their whistles to warn people when they are coming or about to depart.

1369, I told you on Facebook has been preserved and now runs on the South Devon Railway.

The Weymouth Harbour Tramway still exists but not in operation, but I heard some enthusiasts are trying to save the tramway from being ripped up and use it as a tourist attraction.

They have a Facebook page called the Weymouth Quay Heritage Campaign, why not type it up and have look at it.

Just think when they buy the tramway and restore it, I think 1369 should be the engine to run on the tramway during the grand reopening.

By the way, fantastic review of your new Heljan Great Western 1366 Pannier Tank.

Looks very nice the brass safety valve cover looks very well rendered for a plastic part, much better than the recent Hornby Peckett in this regard . Bachmann small GWR tank engines take some beating performance-wise so with the slight pick-up issue on this one I hope it is competitively priced.

Got a shirtbutton one myself.  They are good although mine was a bit iffy at first, not running particularly well.  I do like how heavy they are, you can hear it gliding over the rails in the way that an O gauge loco does, much more realistic.  I'm tempted to get a second one right now.
Have you tried graphite on the track?  Switch off the power, give it a bit of a clean as you would and swipe it with some graphite.  After that, run some trains around to spread it out.  It's far more effective than 'track magic' and it's much cheaper.  I have a temporary layout and I have to do minimal cleaning, it's incredible and my 1366 works brilliantly.

Wonder if you'd get a sound chip in one.

The example you have there number 1369 is only one preserved, you can find it on the South Devon railway working the short heritage trains (It is actually a 1366 class by the way XD). These locos where primarily aimed at shunting and could be found working on the dock yards at Waymouth due to there short wheel base. the 1366 class is actually an updated version of the 1362 class the only difference being that the 1366 class is a pannier tank design whereas the 1362 class is a saddle tank design.

one of my fave tank engines from gwr....I would like this but it would look out of place on my layout....but who cares anyway...I would love to see this with sound....jim
