It means that you tried to do a sin but failed, Your sin is only written when you try to commit it, If you think of doing a sin but don't do it that's not a sin

Conflating thoughts with actions, can land one in the category of telling lies about Allah.

The duelist’s are participants. Someone thinking about sinning, and refraining, no matter their circumstances, are not the same thing.

Fear Allah my brothers, when speaking about Allah’s deen. For Allah knows best.

Same goes for your intention of doing a good deed
If u want to do a good deed but cant do it
It will count as a good deed
So brother and sister always keep your intentions good towards people and earn good deeds
Ps: keep me in your prayer so i can also earn good deeds

Thinking about sin doesn't make you sin if you don't act upon it .

I learn that Allah doesnt punish someone until the action.. so in this case, the killed not only intent but he was fighting and tried to kill his brother but failed.

So, he is doing his intent to kill. That was why hell for him.

There's a distinction between the intention to sin and committing to a duel. Make the distinction

Salam Brother Ali,

A very keen point to note in this analogy here is that if anyone gets killed in a duel, that means that they already engaged in the act of sinning. Therefore, the assumption here was that the act of sin was already committed.

Secondnly, I believe the point of this hadith has been only looked at from one angle. The other angle could be that this hadith is telling us about the severity of a duel and how Muslims are not allowes to partake in duels where one of the participants would surely be dead.

I’m seeing a lot of people in the comments not fully understanding what was in the video. If, for example, you have the full intention (intention being the keyword) of doing something as extreme as watching porn but someone had knocked on your room door then because you had the full intention of committing that act, it is written as a sin. But, if you had the full of intention of doing that same sin but stopped in your tracks because you told yourself “what am I doing?” “This act is displeasing to allah” “I repent” and had actively stopped the act before you did it even though you had the opportunity of doing so, nothing had stopped you, then it is not written as a sin because your intention and your act upon that intention (niyyah) has changed your course of thoughts and actions and had prohibited you from thinking of doing that sin and from acting upon it.

Now the same can be said about commuting a good a dead. If you had an intention of giving charity or helping a friend but you simply did not have an opportunity because something came up in your life that prevented you from doing that good deed, then it is written as a good deed. All that matters in these scenarios is your intention (niyyah). It doesn’t matter whether or not you were able to act upon that deed, but you had the intention (and some niyyahs change like I have explained above)

So I perceive it this way.

1. You got sin for doing the act of bad thing for example killing or stealing.

2. You don't got the sin if you just have the intention to steal or kill because you simply decided to not do it.
For example of you tried to commit adultery, but back out at the last moment because you scared of the outcome and the consequences.

3. you still got the sin if you have the intention, act upon it, but failed.
For example you intend to kill someone using poison, but the poison didn't works. Because you *already in the process of committing* a murder, you will got the sin regardless of the outcome(your target died or managed to survive).

If you have different in opinion, pls care to elaborate

Narrated Al-Ahnaf bin Qais:

While I was going to help this man ('Ali Ibn Abi Talib), Abu Bakra met me and asked, "Where are you going?" I replied, "I am going to help that person." He said, "Go back for I have heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, 'When two Muslims fight (meet) each other with their swords, both the murderer as well as the murdered will go to the Hell-fire.' I said, 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! It is all right for the murderer but what about the murdered one?' Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, "He surely had the intention to kill his companion."
