In this video tutorial, I show you how to forge a skillet. If you want to learn how to forge a pan, you are in the right place! This is a full tutorial for forging a frying pan. This is a fantastic blacksmith project to add to your repertoire!

You will hear many names for a pan... carbon steel pan, skillet, frying pan, iron skillet. They are all synonymous for the same piece.

I have demonstrated my method for making hand forged pans at Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil and also at classes at Cook Cabin Heritage Center in Goshen, Ohio.

Cupping the handle also gives the handle a lot of strength so that when you have a lot of weight in it the handle does not bend or fold over. Good video Roy. 👍

Flax seed oil makes the most durable initial seasoning. For seasoning additionally before storage crisco and flax oil blended makes an outstanding paste. I am a cast iron junkie. 😜

With that arch removed and the sides coming up, it greatly resembles a prospecting pan.

Nicely done, comrade fire chaps. :) I'll have to try it some time.

Love watching your videos. I like how you provide alternative methods for the blacksmiths that improvise tools.

I like a little bit of curvature in my ham handles as well!
Best way to hold onto someone.

I've been thinking about trying to make a skillet for some time now...love your process. I was thinking I needed to make a center fixture to do it all at once. i'm glad I saw you do this!

I've had good luck getting a really nice handle curve by lightly slapping the tong nibs on the side of my anvil. Have to have a good even heat, and don't get too hot.

It creates a really "gentle" bend that I really like

Awesome video, the only thing I've ever forged was my Mom's signature on a bad report card (BTW-didn't end well and never happened again, lol) but you got me thinking I want to forge my own pan. I have zero experience or equipment so a skillet probably won't be my first project. I took a quick look at your channel, looks like you have a lot of good info for beginners. Also noticed you give a lot of tips on the business side too, thumbs up for that!

I like carbon steel cookware, I like working with my hands, I've been trying to come up with a "side hustle" for when I retire and maybe make that retirement date come a little earlier. I still have a few years before I can retire to develop the skills required and get somewhat established. Something to think about anyways. Thanks again for an awesome video!
