I mean, the one we know as Ivan the Terrible actually is referred to with a Russian word that means both "Great" *and* "Terrible". 😁

I mean I would have said "the garlic king" is the strangest

Interestingly enough it wouldn't really be an oxymoron because what terrible actually means has changed over time.

For example Ivan the Terrible was called the "terrible" because he inspired fear, not because he was a poor ruler, he was actually quite competent; if not a bit mad.

So "The Great and Terrible" would make sense for a really badass competent terrifying ruler lol

“Terrible” originally meant “causing terror”. There’s a reason why the Wizard of Oz was “Oz, the Great and Terrible”. It’s the same way “Awful” meant “full of awe” and was used for angels seen by mortals (and thus, even better than “awesome”, which was merely some awe).

If we're talking about weird epithets, I think the Trojan is up there. You know, considering you can get it when you form the kingdom of CORNWALL!

The terrible in this case means someone who causes terror not an inept person

The Kingdom of Mann path was one of my first successes in CK3, and it remains one of my favourites. Looting your way back and forth across Europe, stealing dozens of artifacts and thousands of gold, it's pretty fun! Especially if you use the unique plundering legacies for your dynasty to speed things up.

I love the fact you added John the Terrible and/or the Brave of Moldova 🇲🇩.

The Terrible epithet is more of a bad translation, it's actually closer to the cruel rather than him being a terrible leader.

I remember getting the nickname "With The Tress" once and I had no idea what was going on

A correction Mehmet II wasn’t the Great he was the Conqueror. Or you could use one he would declare himself Kayser-I-Rúm.

Fun fact:In languages like Russian, Greek etc. the terrible isn't always bad. It also means the fearsome or the terribly good and in some cases, it's meaning, is closer to awesome

Many people see the epitaph the terrible and think the person evil, when in reality it derives from the Latin word terribilis, which is like the Latin way of saying awesome.

The epithet "terrible" refers to the original meaning of the word, "exciting terror, awe, or great fear; dreadful; awful" as defined by the Heritage Dictionary. Ivan the terrible is remembered by the history as being extremely ruthless, hence "terrible".

Great did not mean ‘good’, it had nothing to do with morality or graciousness, mercy, etc. Great simply denoted significance. Meanwhile, terrible didn’t mean useless or incompetent or even evilness, but how you inspired fear in your enemies. So being great and terrible is not an oxymoron.

Considering you have to be super brutal to get the name, it makes sense. I just recently was able to elevate the Kingdom of Mann and was only able to do so by non stop raiding and conquering throughout my entire life from ~20 - 65 or so to get enough prestige

My favorite epithet would be ‘the pale death of the saracens’
