How to create a Windows 10/8/7 portable USB?

EaseUS Todo Backup lets you create a Windows 10/8/7 portable USB drive with ease.

1.Things you need:

An external hard drive
The external hard drive cable
EaseUS Todo Backup

2. Preparations (Notices):

Check the unallocted space: The external USB hard drive must have enough unallocated space and it is on the left side of the drive.

Right-click the Windows button, choose Disk Management. Find the external USB drive, and check the unallocated space. If there isn’t enough space, you need to delete the external hard drive partitions to create more space.

Check the partition style: Ensure that the partition style is the same for both the external hard drive and the system drive: both MBR or both GPT.

Right-click the external hard drive, choose Properties. Click Volumes to check the partition style.

3. Steps to create a Windows 10 or Windows 7 portable USB:

Step 1. Connect the external hard drive to your PC and run EaseUS Todo Backup. Click System Clone.

Notice: Your USB drive must be larger than your system drive and boot partition. EaseUS Todo Backup will let you know whether your USB drive is big enough or not with System Clone.

Step 2. Select the destination disk - the USB drive to clone system drive, including system and boot partition. Click on Advanced options and tick Create a Portable Windows USB drive, then click Proceed.

Step 3. Wait till the System Clone process completes.

How to run Windows 10 or Windows 7 from a portable USB drive

Follow steps below to boot the computer from the Windows portable USB drive:

Step 1. Connect Windows 10/8/7 portable USB drive with computer and reboot PC.
Step 2. When the Windows logo appears, press F2 or Del continuously to enter BIOS.
Set computer to boot from USB drive and save the changes.
Step 3. Reboot PC and then you can run your original Windows system.

Tried Todo Backup trial. The clone to portable windows USB drive IS available in the trial -great stuff guys. Works really well. Based on WinPE and Windows To go and I have no idea how they integrate this with the cloned from windows system. I assume the clone isn't using a Windows license - how can it when you're running on totally different hardware! Very clever. Just to note, from a backup point of view this is just doing your system (c:) drive and so doesn't cover anything on other drives.

To make sure everything works out well, please do follow the notice here step by step:

Things you need:
1. An external hard drive
2. The external hard drive cable
3. EaseUS Todo Backup

Step 1. Check the unallocated space and system style

1. Check that the unallocated space is larger than the system disk. Make sure that the unallocated space is on the left-side of the drive.

If there is another volume on the left, back up the data to another device, then delete the volume by right clicking and choosing delete volume.

2. Ensure that the partition style is the same for both the external hard drive and the system drive: both MBR or both GPT.

If you don’t know the partition style for your drives, right-click on a disk, select Properties, and the partition style is listed under the Volumes tab.

If the partition types are different, open disk management - right click the external hard drive and select convert to MBR/GPT (It is decided by the system disk style)disk.

Step 2. Create a Windows portable drive

1. Connect the external hard drive to your PC and run EaseUS Todo Backup.

2. Use the navigation bar on the left-hand side of the interface and click System Clone

3. Select the external hard drive as the target destination to clone the system drive to before proceeding, go to advanced options and tick create a portable Windows USB Drive. If you have an external SSD, also tick "optimize for SSD". Hit OK then Proceed.

Error Message

1. Not enough unallocated space

2. System clone doesnot support cloning mbr disk to gpt or vice versa, please choose the disk with the same type or covert the target disk into the same type.

If you are faced with these errors, go back to step 1 and be sure to properly prepare your disk.

Step 3. Boot from the portable drive

Connect the portable drive on another computer.
Restart the PC and press the key to enter BIOS: which is often F2, F8, or Delete.
Once in BIOS, find the boot menu, and edit to boot from the external drive.
Press F10 to save and exit

Then, you are able to boot from the portable USB drive.

I had some problems: Windows updates the USB 3.0 port driver and it made windows not start. I had to put the usb stick on the USB 2.0 port to repair the driver installation.
I have another problem to shutting down Windows. Windows does not turn off. It stops on the "Turning off..." screen.
