Toronto Police Service | Race & Identity Based Data Collection Strategy News Conference | Wednesday, June 15th, 2022 | 1030am from Toronto Police Headquarters

Today at 10.30 a.m., in the Media Gallery of Toronto Police Headquarters, Chief of Police James Ramer will address the media on the Toronto Police Service’s 2020 Race-Based Data Collection (RBDC) Strategy findings and next steps.

Chief Ramer will be accompanied by Colin Stairs, Chief Information Officer, A/Deputy Chief Kim Yeandle, and Dr. Mai Phan, Race Data Expert Consultant, who will be available to answer questions regarding the strategy, process and data.

The news conference will be broadcast via Dome Productions and will be live-streamed on YouTube.

In 2019, the provincial government directed all police services in Ontario to begin collecting race-based data in instances of reportable use-of-force. The Toronto Police Services Board then approved a “Race-Based Data Collection, Analysis and Public Reporting” policy with the objective of identifying, measuring and, ultimately, eliminating systemic racism.

The Toronto Police Service went a step further than mandated and committed to also include the collection of race-based data related to strip searches. The Service began collecting race-based data in January 2020.

For comprehensive background information on the Service’s RBDC Strategy, please visit our Interactive Story Map.

Media were invited to attend a background briefing on Tuesday, June 14 on an embargoed basis. The embargo is lifted as of 10:30 a.m., when the Toronto Police Services Board will release all the data that will be discussed at the Toronto Police Services Board meeting on Wednesday, June 22. The Toronto Police Service’s full data will also be available at 10:30 a.m., here:

Beverly Bain should have waited until the chief completed the reading of the report. It was not appropriate and did not help her cause. She demonstrated that she too was unwilling to listen….what often complaints the Black community accuse police forces (rightfully) of doing. Then it appears hat she just stormed out! She and her supporters may have not been seeking an apology but perhaps, others within the community may have want that. She spoke as if she was speaking for the entire community….which is pretty damm presumptuous of her. She was not there to hear, participate and work with TPS which is silly since we all know that the police force and policing isn’t going away.

Quote: We are not going to factor in "who is committing the crimes" because there are racist factors in play that cause people to commit crimes!? WTF Excuses to commit crimes...

Might be off topic but watched The Boys season 3 episode 5 and a scene of that episode press conference satire reminded me of this just now. I'm not sure that is a good thing. What I really want to say is if everyone's heart is in the right place then positive changes can happen. The people will know too, ain't no amount of virtue signaling can hde the facts. From policing, to Senior and Executive roles, and the list goes on.
