DIY Dried Orange Tree Ornaments AKA The Christmas Tree CAT Defense System

Since we now have a cat in the household we had to do something to keep ole Jimmy out of the Christmas Tree. With some tips from Jackson Galaxy, apparently cats don't like the smell of citrus and he suggests putting citrus peels at the base of your tree. I decided to take that concept one step further and make dried orange slice ornaments for a nicer look.

They ornaments seem to be working so far! No more cat problems with the tree but best of all these ornaments look GREAT and I might just make them a yearly tradition to the tree anyway!

If you don't have a dehydrator you can also dry oranges in the oven.

Thanks for this informative video! I thought I would have to forgo ornaments this year with our 2 6 mo. Old kittens. Will definitely try the dried citrus ornaments! The dehydrated citrus slices would go great with the woodland theme I am considering for my tree this year. Hopefully the cats will stay out of the tree!

Man, it's October and I already want to decorate because you're really giving Christmas vibes. How long do they smell? I'm wondering if the warmth of the Christmas lights might help give off the citrus. My 2 yr old cat hasn't climbed the tree, got her as a kitten. Plus she doesn't care about citrus or aluminum foil. But my tabby kitten hates citrus and I have a feeling she's going to be a tree climber, since she was climbing me when I brought her home. We'll see. But, let me know how strong the scent is and if they last! Please and thank you!
