If you are a beginner cyclist or thinking of getting back into cycling this video will give you 3 tips to help you become a better cyclist. When I started cycling I had a lot to learn. Somethings I learned from others and some things I learned the hard way. I thought I would make a series and share the things I've learned after cycling 25000km (15500miles).

I'm just getting started with cycling, and tip #1 might seem like a no-brainer but I'm SO GLAD you mentioned it. I haven't heard anyone else on YouTube mention "relaxing and enjoying the ride", but it's something that can easily be forgotten. THANK YOU!!!

I'm coming to this a little bit late but as someone who only got back on a bike a few years ago after a 30 year hiatus, I still consider myself relatively new again.
I don't do long distance road riding but more commuting, shopping, pulling a trailer, social and any reason I can find to leave the car at home and hopefully going to dip my toe into touring later on this year.
I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who still wobble a bit occasionally when looking behind?
I looked behind me on a narrow lane two years ago and ended up on the road with a hole in the knee of my jeans and feeling more than a little humiliated.
After that I got a good set of mirrors and they have been one of the best investments ever for my bike. A major safety asset.
They keep me informed about what's behind or around me on the open road or in traffic.
But I still always look behind and indicate clearly whenever I'm going to change position on the road.
Let's just say that I think mirrors should be a necessity on every bike, no different than on a motorcycle.
Of course, anyone can live without them but as far as I'm concerned, since I got them, I've never looked back! 😜
Boom boom!

This series of videos is for those new to cycling. Hopefully, you won't have to learn some of these things the hard way like I did! If you have any suggestions for what you would like to see in future videos please let me know in the comments.

THANK YOU!! Simple, understandable, and you have a very approachable, likable and reassuring demeanor! I’m a 50-something year old non-athletic female with minimal cycling experience, awaiting delivery on the e-bike I ordered online— I’m soothing my anxious anticipation by searching for helpful YouTube videos so I’ll know what to practice & be mindful of when I start riding. You’ve earned a new subscriber!! 😃💐💐

Also: Be gentle with your brake when you are using hydraulic brakes in the wet. They are so strong that with little drag on the pavement, you can lock your wheels very easily and slide. As with you, I learned that sorta’ the hard way.

Thank you for sharing these tips. I've been sharing my journey of cycling with Fibromyalgia on my channel and always love watching tips on how to make the rides easier. Best of luck!

Three excellent tips. 👍👍 I have to consciously relax my shoulders. I seem to like to ride along with them tensed up. As for brakes, I overreacted on that one. To begin with I almost never touched the front brake for fear of going over the handlebar. 😀 And great advice to look where you want to go. I've ridden with people who hit things because they were looking at them. Sort of a self-hypnosis. 😀

I'm a new rider and just got enough balance to not do the death grip. I'm looking around more, too, and scanning what's ahead just like I do when driving. So, some of the skills from driving transfers to bike riding.

I'm beginning to enjoy riding. Just need to get a bit better before trying the proper way to stop/start/mount/dismount. That will come with practice. I also got better with braking. I tap the rears to slow down enough if needed but still remain in motion safely. I have not jammed on the brakes. Even as a newbie, I know not to do that or it won't end well.

Just keep practicing. I haven't done curbs or potholes (try to avoid large potholes), but I'm learning to ride over other imperfect surfaces with due care.

I've been cycling for about 2 months regularly. My elbows have hurt that whole time. Nothing else hurts. I'm trying to keep relaxed, I don't feel I'm locking my elbows. I am overweight and quite weak in my upper body. Could this be the reason? Putting to much weight on my arms and having a weak core? I have drop bars but I mainly use the hoods unless I'm going downhill.

Do you think its ok to travel far alone on the bike, like have plenty of drinks snack and puncher repair kit aswell, people I know do carry them not a good idea.

Hi, it’s nice to see a video and hear from someone with a starting perspective so thank you for that. My big issue as I’m starting is I find my bike very uncomfortable. There’s a lot of pain from the saddle and also I feel as though I feel every minute undulation in the road surface. Did you find this also and is it something you get used to?

I bought a nice used Specialized Dolce Sport womans bike this week for $600! I’m not sure if I got ripped off but it is in perfect condition and it rides oh so nicely. I’m assuming it’s a good beginner bike?
