What Solo Should YOU Transcribe?

In this video I talk about a transcription that was very difficult for me but one that I found was also very beneficial. A lot of times students will ask me if its good to do the entire solo. I will say that is only good in very specific situations, and Marcus Strickland's solo on '107 Steps' is one of those specific situations.

This solo is in 5/4 and every measure presented a great rhythmic challenge that pulled my feet out from under me at the time I was learning the solo. I memorized the entire solo and playing it all in one take was a labor of love, but one that I feel my sense of time and ability to play in 5/4 benefitted from.

The short answer is to transcribe what you don't already hear or know. In this situation I did not understand what I was listening to, and by learning it and going measure by measure, I was able to slowly grab onto it and make it something that I was able to have more confidence and a better understanding of.

Thanks for watching!

Great Video! I like how you also show the music! I personally feel that if you’re not born a genius like Mozart, then it’s best to learn the language any way you can. 👌🏽

I like how youtube is starting to recommend real videos for me, not “personal brands” putting out poor content that youtube thinks is jazz
