UP: G20 delegates receive grand welcome at Varanasi airport

G20 delegates arrived in Varanasi on June 11. They were accorded a grand welcome at the Varanasi airport, where musical instruments were played to welcome the delegates. Deputy Administrator of USAID Isobel Coleman also arrived at the airport. The G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting under India’s G20 Presidency is scheduled to be held between June 11- June 13 in Varanasi. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is set to chair the meeting.

While I agree that extending hospitality for the guests arriving at the venue is excellent, I tend to believe that the hospitality being extended is too much which is not required. This is because people sometimes misinterpret that India has not left behind our colonial legacy of pampering foreigners. The Indian delegates never receive such a welcome when they travel out of the country and therefore we should have similar reciprocal arrangements for welcoming delegates from abroad. Our traditional welcome should be reserved only for our own people and not to foreigners.
