All things considered; I think Colin could've escaped from the quicktime event on his own. I mean, he broke free from a giant orca hydra, I doubt a white goo blob would've been his breaking point.

Granted, the former was thanks to it getting hit, but he *did* still manage to outlast it.

Also, there's a difference between getting ponctual help and needing it. We don't know if Puro was needed, just that he helped us. I take the mash sequence as a way to show that Colin could've gotten it off on his own, just at a risk of failing since you might not mash fast enough. In comparison, take the vent goo after the gas vents area. Puro needs to swallow it. It starts like a game over cutscene (and is one if you leave the room with him then come back to inspect it), but Puro comes in to swallow it. Now while you can just ignore it, this is a sequence that is instant death. All this considered, I'd say Colin would be able to get pretty far on his own, maybe even escaping.

I’m pretty sure if Colin would have took Puro’s broken mask and tried to put it on he would have became half latex half human, which would give him enough speed and strength to grab the shears and attack Dr. K
