I remember when 'Religulous' and 'Zeitgeist' first came out. I wasn't practicing a faith at all then, but even so it was patently obvious that neither one could be taken seriously. It shouldn't even require mention with 'Religulous', being that it was just a comedic vehicle. While I did like Maher's comedy then, it was clear that he was only distorting and embellishing religious beliefs in order to embarrass its adherents. Then, as now, the clear and simple rule that only a fool would take a comedian seriously should suffice.
As far as 'Zeitgeist' goes, a basic high school education should be more than enough to see it for the propaganda piece it was. I'd read enough mythology when I was a kid (great stories!) to recognize that the content was not in line with what the classical myths said, never mind that even a cursory comparison between the Gospels and pretty much any mythology reveals just how different the Bible is from myth. That coupled with the whole conspiracy theory delivery (computer generated voice and all) made it pretty easy to dismiss... which made it that much more startling when I ran into people who seem to buy it hook, line and sinker.
