I was in 11th grade, never did an assignment in any class. Failing most of them. Didn’t care. Was too cool for school. One day my English teacher brought in a copy of West Side Story on VHS and told me all I had to do to pass her class was watch the film at home and tell her that I watched it. I figured WTH, an easy D. Needless to say, I was immediately smitten with Natalie. Like head over heels. My teacher laughed when I told her. She said I thought you might like her. I was absolutely devastated to learn Ms. Wood was already gone. But it did lead me to an interest in what happened before I was born, which led to me graduating and so on. I still remember that first glimpse of Natalie as Maria. WOW.

Many child stars find it difficult to make the transition to adult actors with success. The one exception was Natalie Wood who reached such dizzying heights of stardom during the mid-50's, the 60's and 70's, she goes down in Hollywood History as a 'Super Star'. A girl with a very slight-build, you couldn't rate her as a 'pin-up queen'. Still she was daring enough to play Gypsy Rose Lee in the Warner Bros. production of Gypsy. But legs be damned, all her talent lay in her head that brought out the vulnerability, the nuances, the sensitivity that was required for the layered performances she amazed viewers with in such films as: One Desire, Rebel without a cause, Splendor in the grass, The Burning Hills, Inside Daisy Clover, All the fine young cannibals, Cash McCall, Love with the proper stranger. Her method of acting was "a tightrope walk between sanity and insanity with a nervous intensity that made her stand out in startling shades". With her mercurial craft, she had the ability to pitch it high, low, hysterical, restrained, violent, genteel - any which way the script demanded. I personally feel she deserved an award each for Splendor in the grass, Love with the proper stranger and All the fine young cannibals. As she turned older, she became more curvy and looked adorable in three-piece ensembles in films like "Sex and the single girl". Natalie Wood will long be remembered.
