The Leica M: Digital vs Film For My Workflow

When do I shoot film, and why? Is film better than digital for specific types of photography? Is it worth the expense of shooting with film when you can use a digital camera? I get these types of questions all the time, so I decided to make this video, specifically about shooting with either my film or digital Leica M bodies. Since I share the same lenses between digital and analogue, the decision to shoot between these two different formats are nuanced and personal. I have my own reasons when to shoot film or digital, you might have your own. In this video I talk about when I decide to grab my Leica M10-R vs my M7, or M11-P vs my M4. Let me know in the comments why or when you decide to shoot film.

In the video I have attached various accessories on my camera bodies. Here are some of the links down below:

I find when shooting digital I delete more than half of the photos taken and it’s in the pursuit of “perfection.” When shooting film I never delete a scanned image (it’s expensive!) and I find myself looking at each image longer and more closely. It’s more documentary in a sense as there are no deleted frames. That can lead to a sense of more connection to the images. It’s interesting— one of the main benefits of digital cameras, unlimited opportunities to take a shot, ends of making it feel a bit less special

I love my M4 (Kanto Camera CLA'd) and also my M9 with the replaced CCD sensor cover. I also use the 28 Elmarit and the 35 Summicron (both vintage versions). Leica makes wonderful tools that are a pleasure to use. Cheers Take!

I say know your tools. Film, digital, all tools for making photos. I shoot with both, I enjoy both, I try and learn as much about my tools so I can make the best choice for me.

I`ve shot film most of my photography life firstly with the Leica M3 then the Nikon F2. The cost of film and the long wait time for the film to be processed forced me to digital. When I heard about the Leica MD 262 I knew it was the camera for me. It shoots like film and there`s no difference in the way I shoot both the film and digital cameras I own...!

I will tell you how I mix film and digital as soon as film becomes economically viable again! 😉

The question is if you want to make large prints for an exhibition with say 30-40 prints has anyone done a comparison between say the Leica M6 film compared to the Leica M Typ 262?
