Raspberry Pi power over ethernet and mount it outside

Cobbling together a power over ethernet (POE) solution for a Raspberry pi 2, and mounting it as a security camera in a bird feeder outside.
More raspberry pi related stuff at:

The software I use on it is something I wrote myself:
I couldn't bother to figure out how to use the "motion" package. For you, it probably makes sense to figure out "motion" instead.

Security camera.... posted on YouTube...

The rigging is A+. I’m impressed of how varied technical things you know. It’s like you are a Wikipedia of DIY, on a pro level

The milky texture is called Crazing. You can replace the panels with acrylic which is UV resistant and anti-craze. Edit: obviously glass is great too. I just have been researching acrylic for a project and this came up.

I never cease to be amazed at the contrast between Matthias' neat and tidy woodworking and his messy, untidy electrical work! I guess it's a case of, "if you can't see it, it don't matter" :-)

POE is very handy around the house. I have security cameras running on it also.

Power over Ethernet was designed with compatibility with non PoE devices in mind, so there's no harm in plugging a network line with PoE into a non PoE device. And PoE sometimes uses the orange/green pairs anyway to deliver power, (yes, I've seen it done that way.) Too late for this project, but at least you'll know next time. BTW, using the old bird house as a place to hide a camera, great idea!

I think that's the definition of an engineer. Someone who invents the wheel and then discovers wheels have been around hundreds of years.

dissapointed by the lack of green paint in this video

If you are using the ONVIF firmware you can configure some of the GPIO pins on the pi for controlling a servo or a stepper driver and use those as pan/tilt. Also IR illumination can be added.

I did same kind of thing with Axis camera. I just bought newest Raspberry Pi which have some kind of PoE support but afaik it still needs some more stuff to work with normal PoE.

Yeah, when I used Digis internet service here in Utah, which was later renamed to Rise Broadband after I switched to CenturyLink for internet to go with my home phone service (formerly Qwest, formerly US West, formerly Mountain Bell), I had to use a PoE box for the little radio transceiver on the roof. That cable could then go straight from the roof, through a sealed hole, and right into the computer or a router/bridge/switch, etc.

Will the rpi support the extreme weather conditions and outdoor temperature?

can u pr0vide more info on the power regulator you used between POE and raspberry. i am setting up POE just for security cameras in and out of house.

what is limit on distance with POE? i have 4 buildings apart from home and was setting up POE there also. 70yrds to first and another 70 to last building... also does POE come on10gb networks?

You can get really cheap PoE extractors that you can trust conform to whatever PoE spec you want to use. I got a cheap 12V one off amazon and soldered it inside the waterproof case of a non-poe camera I bought so I only have to run 1 cable to it and it still looks identical on the outside.

I have the same PoE splitter, and it works only from 48V. Ubiquiti also makes 48V injectors, but they are way less common than the 24V ones. A neater solution would be to keep the DC-DC converter with a passive PoE splitter, which just taps off the power as you did.

would it be a good idea to insert a surge protector or even galvanic isolator between your network and the POE injector?

Awesome project. Super sneaky spot for the camera too!

Wow thats creeping me out.
Yesterday i thought about powering 2-3 Pis with a camera over ethernet and ordered some stuff.
now you post this video. :D

An outfit called Pi-Supply makes a PoE HAT available now. No engineering required on your part. They even have a case available to house the entire assembly. It even transfers 2 times more power then your 24 volt solution. Works with any of the 40 pin GPIO models.

You can buy ethernet cable that is rated for outdoors, and PVC pipe is probably better for burial. If you bury it with ends exposed you can run new cables in the future if needed. I'm surprised that PoE supply turned DC on, there are supposed to be sensing resistors it tries to detect before applying power, specifically to avoid damaging non-PoE devices.

Interesting. I bought a Pi and a camera for this reason, but now I'm going to have to try this method. Thank you for sharing this Matthias.
