Lyrics

As merry as the days were long
I was right and you were wrong
Back at the old grey school
I would win and you would lose
But you've got everything now
You've got everything now
And what a terrible mess I've made of my life
Oh, what a mess I've made of my life
No, I've never had a job
Because I've never wanted one
I've seen you smile
But I've never really heard you laugh
So who is rich and who is poor?
I cannot say...oh
You are your mother's only son
And you're a desperate one
Oh...
But I don't want a lover
I just want to be seen...oh...in the back of your car
A friendship sadly lost?
Well this is true...and yet, it's false
Oh...
But did I ever tell you, by the way?
I never did like your face
But you've got everything now
You've got everything now
And what a terrible mess I've made of my life
Oh, what a mess I've made of my life
No, I've never had a job
Because I'm too shy
I've seen you smile
But I've never really heard you laugh
So who is rich and who is poor ?
I cannot say...oh
Oh...
You are your mother's only son
And you're a desperate one
Oh...
But I don't want a lover
I just want to be tied... oh...to the back of your car
To the back of your car
To the back of your car
To the back of your car
To the back of your car
To the back of your car
Oh...

"No I've never had a job because I'm too shy" is one of the funniest lines in the history of music.

This song was all me in my late teens/early 20s. I couldn't hold a job due to severe social anxiety. Not sure how I overcame it but this song gave me comfort

But I don't want a lover I just want to be seen.

That hits hard.

RIP Andy Rourke. A very under appreciated member of one of the most iconic bands of the 80s. The band wouldn’t be the same without him.

This is such a weird song because when I listen to it in a good mood it makes me feel even better but when I listen to it while I'm down it feels like Morrissey perfectly understands what Im going through and that makes me cry even more

I personally LOVE IT when Morrissey sings in that falsetto voice toward the end of this song where he exclaims "I just want to be tied ... TO THE BACK OF YOUR CAR". What a terrific vocal range he had then.

Sending love and positive vibes out to those who deal with debilitating anxiety at times. The Smiths' music is my comfort.

Having been a bass player for nearly 40 years, much of it as a full time pro, I think Andy Rourke is one of the greats.

THIS SONG IS SO REAL
“what a mess i’ve made of my life”
“i don’t want a lover i just want to be seen… in the back of your car”
“i’m too shy”
“i just want to be tied to the back of your car”
these lyrics relates to me so much morrisseys lyric are so real, in every single song i can find atleast a lyric or unexplained feeling, his voice is so beautiful not to mention and the instrumentals are so beautiful

This is by far one of the best songs of the smiths.

This song represent so much to me.
There was people in my past (high school) that betrayed me, hurt me and made me cry, and I promised that they will be sorry and beg for my forgiveness.
And now my life is a mess, and they got good jobs, plenty of friends, a very happier life than mine.

I used to be a prodigy child. Excellent grades, parents and teachers proud of me, other kids hating me because of my privileges, you know
But social anxiety came along and ruined my life. I droped out of college two years ago, ruined my friendship with wonderful people and can't get a job
After years of being a young promise I'm here being perfectly useless. Seeing my old classmates being happy and having a life better than mine is hard. But at least I'm here, I guess

"And what a terrible mess I've made of my life
Oh, what a mess I've made of my life"  We can all attest to that..

I relate to this song so much. There was this person who I knew since childhood and we used to be good friends, i’d always win in the games and stuff we used to do together. However I stopped seeing him when I was 14 due to personal reasons. And I ran into him 2 years later, I don’t know why but he didn’t say anything to me, he saw me clearly and pretended as if he didn’t recognize me. And what hurt even more was that he had a group of friends, was in a relationship, and was ready to move out of town. While i’m here miserable, isolated, and alone.

Never gets a mention definitely one of their best songs, Johnny's guitar on this is amazing. Saw them 1983, Hacienda, Manchester.

Ain't this the most relatable song ever?

You know, it’s really touching that all you find solace in the music. Back in those days I suffered nothing more than teenage anxiety but the music made us feel special all the same. Then I put the vinyl away and, like an old lover, I thought of them from time to time, with a wistful smile. Now, some 35 years later I find myself playing snatches of Rusholme Ruffians before work. Lately it’s been this track and I can’t get over how fresh they sound. I think their star will shine forever. For all you box bedroom rebels, keep the faith. Oh, and RIP Andy. Cheers for the memories x

I cant explain it, but this song makes me feel a deep pit in my stomach. Like a friend just died or something, but it also makes me want to cry out every drop of tears.
