Google DeepMind trains AI to play No Man's Sky and other video games — meet your new copilot, Google’s advanced artificial intelligence lab DeepMind has trained a new model capable of playing high-end games like No Man’s Sky, Valheim and even Goat Simulator without requiring special instructions. It opens up the potential of having virtual teammate not out for victory at any cost, that won't double cross you and that you can make do the boring jobs.

I think its time NMS evolved into something beyond normal gaming because most games now adays are a copy and paste and just story generated with an end….

I think Hello Games devs are trying to make NPC more interactive with players...more specifically dialog...idk...just a guess

I hope not. The game already suffers from really awful and confusing machine translation in non-english speaking regions and adding AI will even further complicate things. I play the german version of the game and certain dialogues and item descriptions are just gibberish.

Text generative AI is also known to make false things up or to be rude and misbehave. And then there is the whole data harvesting part.

I believe it won't take a week after implementation that the AI will tell the player some private stuff from others or tell them a plethora of racial slurs. I'm not a big fan of AI language models.

If they add this kind of AI to NMS, i will stop updating the game or perhaps even uninstall it, because i mostly play in co-op and i think there is a chance that it won't work with outdated versions.

Well to me CaptainSteve AI could help find problems in the game and be reported much easier and earlier

Update ideas: would be great if choosing a race as your appearance BEFORE starting the game, eg. Vykeen, you are locked to it, and they each had race specific perks. Outlaw should be a secondary option to each race, and be locked to the character at the start. It would make special gameplays available, and more colourful. Also, as many before me pointed out, scenarios preselected would be great, like the no starter ship challenge, the fugitive challenge, etc. I would also appreciate if I didn't have to do the Expanding the base missions every time, and the story would still progress on without that, so you can do the Purge without the overseer, scientist, etc.

Adding in modern AI capabilities is a must for a game like this. It will add "life" and longevity to it. If they add in voice acting in the game, future missions that are already procedurally generated gets a boost in missions and the worlds may begin to feel lived in. I imagine 10 years from now when entire worlds on nms has cities and civilisation. A result of AI and future updates.

Wonder how many freighter battles the AI bots retry on trying to roll an S class before they crack the sads and decide it would be easier to just enslave humanity

I'd love to have more life like npc and seeing how the skyrim AI MOD almost makes it seem like you're conversating with a character is crazy awsome and I hope to see how it gets incorporated

This could also mean that the collected data could be used to train AI for beta testing purposes.

Maybe they could add AI npc to nexus missions

My Captain - One of the ways that would bring the player in a more personal one-on-one basis is to allow the individual to actually talk to the character in the game rather than selecting a question - the character would of course speak back. AI already does that to a certain extent and this would be beneficial for both Google and HG.

I'm not sure if just adding intelligent NPCs to the game, other than those that you must interface with is of much benefit to Google - can you imagine being continuously interrupted by NPCs while you are trying to play the game - maddening...

I don't mind as long as AI doesn't take over the game. Like killing bosses and taking over resources

AI will most likely be included in many games in the future in one way or another. For AI to work you need a permanent internet connection and No Man's Sky does work without, at least at the moment. But you won't need AI to enhance the NPCs and other aspects of the game though. There are ways to improve this with more complex algorythms.

What do I think? I think I like watching your speculation videos. I'll wait to see what actually happens. This was an especially good video. There was more than the usual amount of your intro music in it.

Skyrim modders have been using AI for followers in the last year or so, it's cool but has a way to go still

I would love this to happen, but I guess I've become a jaded. Itll probably be amazing, but break multiplayer even more, and make everybody's head invisible...lol
