Previously on Demystifying Medicine, Diane Shader Smith gave a talk on her daughter, Mallory Smith's memoir: Salt in My Soul. It is the story about how Mallory bravely fought, but lost her battle to cystic fibrosis. Nearing the end of her life, Mallory was treated with an experiment treatment called Phage Therapy. This video is a discussion by her father, Mark Smith, on the potential of Phage Therapy in treating difficult bacterial infections, such as those found in patients with Cystic Fibrosis.

This video was made by McMaster students Guneet Mahal & Neelam Farrakh in collaboration with the McMaster Demystifying Medicine Program.

A special thanks to Mark Smith and Diane Shader Smith for kindly sharing their time and stories with us.

Thanks for this video. The lack of interest in this field of medicine highlights the detrimental impact of treating medicine as a business rather than a public service.
