I like how you look first for what is available around you instead of running to the store. Nice work.

While your vid made it look easy, I can appreciate all the time and hard work it took to establish your garden.

So glad to know how to get rid of that grass. I've been doing it wrong this whole time. I use pine needles as a mulch, but never thought about just adding them to the soil. Great show, Thanks so much.

Pine needles contain terpene which prohibits germination of seeds. Pine straw has long been used to prevent seed germination. It's an allopathic property, rather than physical. For that reason, pine straw is terrific in ornamental beds, around trees, etc., but not so good in the veggie garden until AFTER the seeds have germinated and the plants are growing.
However, different pine species have various allopathic properties.

Sweet Bungar shirt! I am planting a very small garden on Long Island and it's nice to see someone giving tips in the same climate.

wonderful TIP! I'm going to my mom's this week, she lives on lake and i'm going to start raking her sea weed and bringing buckets home. Good excercise and they love that I'm helping them with their beach, and I get the seaweed compost!

Its great that you are using free resources that are around you. Also nice that you can do all this while in school!

That looks like hard work but I bet it's rewarding when the plants have grown.

Another awesome video. My goodness you're so lucky to have the resources. Here in the UK it's illegal to take any sand of the beaches - we have to buy it from a store. You've soooo much land - I envy you. I can't wait to see what you're going to plant in your new garden. Best wishes from Stephen in England. PS - your longer hair suits you - keep it growing. lol

Enjoyed your video and you seem to have found a method that works for you. An idea that may be beneficial when you put the bed to sleep in the fall is the "Back to Eden" garden method by Paul G. He uses wood chips to cover his garden and does not till or till in, and in about a season the wood chips turn to rich compost. His video is on Vimeo I believe and some youtubers use his method also. Love your enthusiasm for gardening, keep up the great work.

You are doing everything the County extension people say to do. You are also using an expensive tiller, you are doing a lot of labor and spending a lot of time. There is a better way that is so much easier and you will build soil faster and better than any other method. It's easy. Check out the Back to Eden method. No tiller, no weeding, no compost bins, no ripping out sod and no watering. A great garden the first year and just gets better every year after. Very low labor & productive.

Don't forget to do a big long 2-3 part video on harvesting veggies from your garden!

Fun tip to get rid of stones.

Make a pile, prior to finally moving it.

In essense, pile it twice.

The rocks will fall out of the pile, most of the time, due to the angle being too steep, so long as they aren't flat, or too big that they sink into the pile.
