The Dumbest Thing to Happen to Graphics Cards

The 12VHPWR connector is probably the most unnecessary thing to happen to graphics cards. The 8-Pin PCIE connector has been tried-and-true for over 15 years, yet Nvidia launched this new one to many problems (it clearly wasn't ready) and IT IS STILL HAVING PROBLEMS.

It goes everything from the adaptors, the "bend radius", the upgraded cases, possibly forced to upgrade power supplies (which are usually very reliable now)- that all go to make the 12VHPWR connector a rough launch. I personally also find it pretty frustrating. HOWEVER! There are clear reasons to why it exists... so is it all worth it?

we are almost at a momentous subscriber goal...

also at 1:45 is possible the light still shines of a failure because the 4 sense pins of the 12VHPWR aren't actually going to anything on the power supply because of the adaptor, which would make sense (pun intended). However, it doesn't change that it's too hard to tell if you even have it plugged in right, which is pretty ridiculous

$2000 GPU should never have such issues...

I am just suprised that there is no lawsuit against Nividia. This is clear fire hazard and should not be tolerated. Probably if someones home burns down then there will be some action.

Because Nvidia is transforming itself in Apple. Doing experiments with people's money.
And people still buy it...

Pay 2000 for a single card that may or may not burn your house.

Good thing I'm broke so by the time I can afford GPU with 12v connectors, the tech will most likely be improved enough.

At 9:12, no one commented on the 1.9 safety factor for PCIE vs 1.1 for 12VHPWR. At 1.1 it virtually does not have any safety factor.

This 12VHPWR connector is a textbook example of solution searching for problem. 8-pin connectors are more than enough until, like you mentioned, something crazy like 4090ti. So for 95% of people it solves no problem and introduces new ones like having to use adapters that can literally start a fire. No surprise nobody likes it.

As an engineer student seeing safety factor of 8pin 1.9 and 16VHPWR 1.1 is crazy in itself, safety factor of 1.1 is mostly unheard of most things range from 1.3 to 1.7-2 if you wanna be safe

It's funny that 4090 owners are beta testers for a fire hazard :).

Well supposedly all RTX 5000 will have mandatory 12VHPWR even the 5060 so yet another reason to go with AMD.

I'd prefer 4x 8pin connectors on a 600w GPU. Most PSUs will have that option about the rated wattage. I have 2x 8pins on my 6800 and the cables are bent back and tucked no issue whatsoever and barely create an aesthetic issue, Heck with the right cable routing and perhaps custom sleeved cables 4x 8pin setups would probably look pretty dam good if you ask me...But no let use crappy adapters and or force power supply manufactures to use proprietary BS and make the consumer pay for it while potentially causing a house fire...GJ Nvidia

This is like one of those it works on paper but not in reality kind of design the original connectors we have been using was over engineered to make sure this kind of issue does not occur but not only has this 12VHPWR reduced the port size it also increased the power flowing through it immensely and its burning up as a result even Intel washed their hands off it and they had a hand in both its design and certification.

Our boy here doesn't understand that only 6 pins on an 8 pin carry "power". Additionally, the 12v (12 pin) connector has an additional 4 pins (sense pins) that perform the work of the 2 other pins in the 8 pin connector. Therefore, the 12v connector has 12 power delivery pins and 4 sense pins, just like using 2 - 8 pin connectors.

1 cable pushing up to 600 watts = more concentrated heat. It's going to melt the plastic.

I'd rather have a 4090 with four 8-pin cables hanging off it and knowing its safe and won't melt. I do NOT care how my video card looks, I care how it runs. If I'm spending that much money (almost $3000 after taxes in Canada), I care about its safety and longevity, not if it looks "neat".

I didn't upgrade to the 4000 series for a couple of reasons, (this being one of them). I'm most likely going full AMD after this, as their upscalers and frame gen is universal. It's funny that I have to run a mod to get framegen on my RTX 3080 in Cyberpunk. Apparently Nvidia thinks only their 4000 series can use framegen. Yet here I am using AMD's framegen in Starfield and in Cyberpunk. Even got framegen to run on my buddies RTX 2080 Super....

Nvidia can go @#$ itself.

The 12 pin somehow makes Apple's Lightning connector look like a reliably durable innovation. Just sayin...

200 melted connectors a month and Nvidia STILL doesn't do recalls

As an engineer with proper electrical degree I can proudly say: I predicted this thing will mel the moment I saw it and rated power numbers. I am sure Nvidia did their testing correctly but they showed lack of imagination where it comes to all sorts of factors. Personally I got new 80+ Titanium PSU with new connector as standard but it will probably be a while until I use card with it. What I wonder about is if AMD will use these connectors in new Radeons. Intel will probably not release anything that needs more than two 8-pin PCIe connectors so they will probably not bother and not wanna risk it - unlike what Nvidia wanted to achieve using old PCIe connectors is an advantage for competition

thats the reason i went with the nitro 7900xtx instead of a 4090 . no need to ditch the dark power 12 or use the fire hazard cable ^^

maybe NVIDIA wanted their graphics card to run on Steam and that’s Epic?
