Kylie Minogue, Marilyn Monroe - Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend (LaLCS, by DcsabaS)

"LaLCS" stands for "Live and Live Combined Stereo", which means that the left and the right parts of the video are from two different LIVE performances! This format is great to discover interesting variations!
Regarding this video, now you can compare Marilyn Monroe's classic in Marilyn's, and in Kylie's live presentations! Of course, there are many changes even in the music itself, even though they tried to follow the spirit of the original. Which one do you like more?

O.O Omg! they're really crazy, performing needs focus and alcohol is the ultimate enemy of concentration.

We have these possibilities:
1) they recorded the music and the song in 1 take (with 2 singers +own mics)
2) there was only 1 singer (Marilyn) and changed the mic during the song (why?)
3) Marilyn sung the opera-like parts not the same time as the other parts, and these were mixed together later - using film or.and multi-track tape recorders. Because of the opera-like part has the narrower band-width, this could be recorded first. The quality is mysteriously good - if this was the case.

@launwatch I think Marilyn was actually singing live, but was dubbed with an opera singer during the first part, and maybe by herself during the rest (but it could also be live). Anyway, her voice is similar to the usual, so, if she was under the influence of drinks (quite possible :-), than this must be a common practice for her :-)...
If drunken, Kylie is also reportedly much more defiant, soft and happy, but there are very few video evidences for this. On stage she is alert - as you wrote.

Could you give a link (then maybe I can make an analysis)?

@launwatch (cont.) There is one more important thing you should know: During the first part, between 0m56s and 1m30s (the opera style singing), on the left you can hear the real Kylie Minogue (her live singing), but on the right side that is NOT Marilyn Monroe. (She was dubbed for this part. Common practice in old Hollywood.)

I checked 2 videos: watch?v=_i2xVpI3RGU, watch?v=NVj7VHb4CyQ
Both are great, but not live (lip-synched after the film). Some acoustic features (such as the cut-off frequency, noise floor) are different when the opera-like singing appears, namely between:
watch?v=_i2xVpI3RGU - 0m37s - 1m13s
watch?v=NVj7VHb4CyQ - 1m49s - 2m00s
It seems even the used vocal mics (in the studio) were different, while the mic for the music remained the same! So, the question remained the same: who sang those parts?

The question is this: how would it be possible to record the music in 1 take, while the singing in 2 (or more)? From the 60s they could have used multi-track tape-recorders for this purpose, but in the 50s their quality was hardly good enough.
As I wrote it before, the opera-like singing was recorded with different acoustic parameters, possibly with a different microphone. So, if the opera-like singing was also from Marilyn, then why did she change the mic during the song? (cont.)

Some additional info:
In those early years the audio editing/manipulating possibilities were quite limited. The orchestra could follow the film while playing the music, and one or more singers could sing their parts (lip-synched), but couldn't put together a continuous music from their parts.
Also, why to change the mic suddenly, if the same person was singing further?

Well it is posible that she recorded it in the studio for the scene like how it is done today, hence she lip syncs her OWN voice. Both are definitely her though...I don't think it's possible to know all of that equipment information from a video where she only sings for a couple of seconds.

You know, it's a question of how much alcohol she drank :-)...
In general, there are MANY singers, unfortunately, who feel necessary to drink before they step up in front of the audience. I think this is a bad omen for his/her future.

@launwatch Well, Marilyn had a very warm and friendly singing voice. Kylie's usual singing voice is much higher ("harsh", if you prefer this term), but you should appreciate, that THIS TIME (a tribute concert to Marylin) she intentionally sang in much warmer tone!
Kylie's singing is more rhythm-driven ("brash"?), because she is more of a professional singer/dancer with acting talents, while Marilyn was more of an actress, with singing/dancing talents. (cont.)

Not true...If you watch the prince and the showgirl, and you see the seen where Marilyn sings to Laurence Olivier on the couch, she's actually singing in a tone very similar to the one you here at the beginning....highly doubt it was dubbed

In Marilyn's day Hollywood specialized in "mime" now popularized as lip-syncing. I don't think Marilyn actually sang in this film! She was never a singer. And don't think that she would have ever performed such a complicated scene in one take!

@Kylie2011DcsabaS Upon reflection Marilyn was doing it live? thought it was filmed for a movie, & probably drunk or high so appeared softer. Kylie was not under the influence & was more alert and on edge as she did it live so came across more earnest. In this instance, having to mimic someone else almost entirely & live Kylie did do the better job. I prefer Marilyn as it appear more playful not so 'grab the jewels'.
