Take Your Chess Skills To The Next Level With High-Quality Courses

The King and Pawn vs. King endgame is one of the most fundamental and important endgames in chess. Every chess player must master this type of endgame because many other endgames eventually simplify into this situation after pieces and pawns are exchanged.

The most crucial aspect of a King and Pawn endgame is whether the side with the pawn can successfully promote it to a queen, or if the side with only the king can stop the promotion.

Many chess players, especially beginners and intermediate-level players, struggle with these positions. They either fail to promote their pawn or, when defending with only a king, don't know the correct method to stop the pawn's promotion.

In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov will teach you 2 simple rules that will help you easily win such King and Pawn endgames. These core, fundamental ideas will enable you to find the best (or winning) move within seconds in these types of endgames.

You will learn the following:

► The key squares to focus on for pawn promotion
► Whether to place your king in front of or behind the pawn
► When to push your pawn
► How to avoid stalemating your opponent
► The concept of opposition
► Exceptional cases involving h- and a-pawns
► How to defend and draw if you have only the king

By mastering these principles, you'll be much more confident and accurate in King and Pawn endgames!

15:50 Puzzle of today has a lot of winning moves. I choose simple b7+. If Kb8 we play a7+ forcing a king to take and we play Kc7 to premote.
If instead Ka7 is played. We will run our king to c8 and advance our pawn

Thank so much for explaining it in details the endgame pawn opposition. Sometimes I have problems checkmating my opponent because he plays opposition correctly and I don't. But from now on I will remember the rule perfectly 😊

The answer is b7 Kb8 a7 Kxa7 Kc7 Ka6 then b8 = Q

Solution 1:
1.b7+ kb8
2.a7+ kxa7
3.kc7 ka6
4.b8=Q ka5
5.Qb3 ka6
6.Qb6#

Solution 2:
1.kd7 kb8
2. b7 ka7
3. Kc8 kxa6
4. b8=Q

Solution 1 is faster and more forcing but both seems to be valid to me. Idk if there are any more ways to win.

Edit: my bad. Solution 2 transposes to same lines as solution 1 if white plays kc7 in move 3 instead of kc8. Both solutions are actually equally forcing 😅
