Compression vs. Sidechaining // Sidechain Compression in Hip Hop

No matter what style of music you are creating, compression is a tool that will be useful in your production. Utilizing compression properly will undoubtedly take your music to the next level.

Sidechain compression has been present in electronic and house music since its creation, but has become more prominent in hip hop in recent decades. Adding sidechain compression to a beat, or any song, can definitely take it from good to great. The MPC One offers sidechaining capabilities through the “Mother Ducker” effect input.

I hope you enjoy this video and the beat, and I hope the video provides some inspiration for your own production. I will be in the comments, so let me know if you have any questions or comments about what you want to see next!

Thanks for the support!

So you need to apply Mother Drucker to both sounds? How does the MPC know that the sample track is the one to duck under the kick? Thanks for this video!!

Thank you so much, Ryan. I never fully understood the compression/sidechaining dynamic. I do have a question: Once you applied compression in the first part of the video on the SP 404 SX, the drums did sound lower, but the ride's seemed out of proportion (they seemed very loud in comparison) with the beat. Please don't take that as an insult, because I am a total novice and my knowledge is no where even close to your knowledge about production, but I was hoping you could explain that to me a little more. Thank you for the video. Blessings!
