One of the most important skill sets you can have at your disposal as a piano player is to know how to read sheet music (notes) so that you can learn to play the songs you love!

We’ve touched base on this before with our previous rundown on “How To Read Notes”, here:

It’s been a very helpful lesson for a lot of people, but I was left wondering... how can we make it EVEN better?

There are many different ways to learn musical notation, and I have a few new tricks up my sleeve that I thought might be helpful for new players trying to get a scope of it.

Do it daily when alert and not tired. Stumble, be patient, keep expectations reasonable. Rome wasn't built in a day. You will improve.

You are the most enthusiastic, most irresistibly charming, and most cheerful music teacher on YouTube. And the way you break things down to make them so much simpler is astounding. Most teachers I've come into contact with give you tiny bits of information at a time and they seem to be trying to make it more confusing... and they never come back and put the little bits of information they've given you together so it's up to you to connect the dots. Thank you nice lady

the most valuable advice I can give as someone who struggled to sight read for ages is to play! the more you read the easier it gets and the quicker you spot the patterns and ideas discussed in this video. you'll build up a bank of mental patterns that appear in each style and you'll learn to not only recognise them but to play them without thought. these tips are really useful but the best way to get the most out of them is to keep reading. good luck!

This was very helpful. No thirds, fourths, etc. actually make sense. And I REALLY appreciate you pointing out the flow from the bass clef through middle C to the treble clef. Thanks!

Marvelous. I'm 77 and bought a Korg Pa600 2 years ago. Know chords etc., but am just getting into reading sheet music. I took John Thompson's through 1A lesson book in the 1950s, and love music, but no playing until I also took up bass electric guitar 3 years ago. What a find for retirees with a love for music and the time and desire to want to re-acquaint.

I'm an absolute beginner and last night I was doing the landmark interval trick on my own and thought to myself "I should just go learn the proper way of sight reading, it's easier to form good habits then break bad ones" so here I am watching this video for help and you're teach me the same trick, I love it!
Thanks I love your videos
