My sister attends Waters Elementary for eighth grade. At her school they had an after school program called Strings Around the World. This program is a guitar and art class exploring the cultures of India, Spain, and Morocco. My sister told the teacher, Ms. Zelle, that I played the oud and guitar. Ms. Zelle then invited me to play for her students. My visit resulted in this set of four videos. First I visited the class, played and had a little question and answer session with the kids. Then, Ms. Zelle and Ms. Veccione (the two teachers running the program) asked me to play music for the parents as they came in to see the Strings Around the World art exhibit and concert.
For the class I played the Spanish piece, Asturias on the guitar, and Longa Farafazah on the oud (though not Moroccan I think the more important point is that I was giving them a taste of music played live on the oud). The tough thing about talking to a classroom full of kids for the first time is that you forget everything you were going say. I made some mistakes when talking about the music and so here are the corrections. One: Albéniz died in 1906 and so he was obviously not very active in the 1900s. He lived from 1860-1906. Two: my statement that the music of Turkey and the music of Morocco are similar should be taken in the broadest of senses (in that they use some of the same instruments and Maqamat, i.e. Middle Eastern scales). In the specifics, however, Turkish and Moroccan music are very different styles with different ways of approaching music. I hope my statement in the video does not offend anyone. All and all it was a very fun experience and I learned a lot from my first time in the classroom. I would like to do it again.
