The imminent return of Jesus Christ is a foundational truth for Christians, offering hope, motivation, and a sense of urgency. Jesus Himself promised His return in John 14:2-3, assuring believers that He would come again to take His followers to be with Him. This return will be sudden and unexpected, as emphasized in Matthew 24:42-44, where Jesus warns His disciples to stay vigilant. Similarly, 1 Thessalonians 5:2 describes the coming of the Lord as like a "thief in the night," urging Christians to live with constant readiness.
Believers are called to holiness in light of Christ’s imminent return. 1 John 3:2-3 teaches that those who anticipate seeing Christ purify themselves, as He is pure. The reality that Jesus could return at any moment should drive Christians to turn away from sin and pursue righteousness. Peter reinforces this in 2 Peter 3:10-12, explaining that the world will ultimately face judgment, and knowing this, believers should live in holiness and godliness.
The return of Christ is also a driving force behind the Great Commission. As Matthew 28:19-20 commands, Christians are to spread the Gospel to all people, making disciples and teaching them to obey Christ’s commands. This task is urgent because Christ’s return is near, and the window of opportunity for salvation is closing. 2 Corinthians 6:2 emphasizes the urgency: "Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation."
Christ’s return is not only a call to action but also a source of comfort. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 promises that when Jesus returns, believers will be caught up to meet Him in the air, and we will be with Him forever. This passage calls Christians to comfort one another with these words, reminding them that the return of Christ is a joyous event for His people.
For those enduring suffering, Christ’s return brings the assurance of justice and eternal rest. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10 promises that Jesus will return to bring vengeance on those who reject the Gospel and to glorify His saints. This hope encourages believers to persevere, knowing that their trials will one day end, and they will be with the Lord forever.
In light of the imminent return of Christ, believers are encouraged to set their minds on eternal things, as Paul writes in Colossians 3:1-4. Rather than focusing on the temporary things of this world, Christians should live with their eyes fixed on heaven, knowing that when Christ appears, they will be with Him in glory. This truth should shape every aspect of a believer's life, leading to a life of holiness, urgency in evangelism, and unwavering hope.
Christ’s return is certain, sudden, and near. As believers, we are called to live in readiness, to share the Gospel, and to find comfort in the promise of His coming. Jesus is coming soon, and when He does, He will take His people to be with Him forever. Let us live in eager anticipation, purifying our hearts, and being faithful in the work He has called us to.
