John Deere 60 startup and short drive

This is a 1954 John Deere model 60 two cylinder antique tractor. This is a quick video on how to start and drive it. It was the first start of the day and didn't need any choke. For you experienced guys, you'll hear a whirring noise coming from the flywheel side of the engine. I think there's a bearing going out on the governor.

Lol, back in the day I used to leave the can on the exhaust just to see the look of awe in my kids eyes when it flew off the exhaust pipe when the tractor started.

That 60's series tractor you have brings back so many memories. As a kid of around 10 years old (I'm 64 years old now), I used to visit the farmer across the street. I often helped him and his boys bed down milking cows, clean stalls, etc.. Anyway- once in awhile I use to stand on the axle on the left side and hold on to the back of the seat while he plowed (3 bladed) and we did a lot of cutting sorghum. After a year of hanging out with them, they used to send me on the tractor by myself to get empty wagons hauling hay or straw, and a few times I spread manure. Regardless what I was doing, I loved driving that tractor. Unique to at least the 60 and 70 you could hold down one brake petal and make a 90 degree turn with those close together front wheels. Thanks for demonstrating your tractor.... Our tractor even had power steering. I always thought the engines were bigger. It's hard to believe a 2 cylinder could do so much work, and they had that chug-chug sound even when plowing the RPM's did raise much, I think it was a slow running engine. Now that I read it only had two cylinders I can understand why it would bog down once in awhile in the damp Pennsylvania shale type dirt plowing. I like the Farmall H for it's size was also another work horse and well built tractor.

Nice 60! We have a 1954 model as well but she's in rough shape and hasn't run in about 25 years. Can't wait to get her running again someday. Thanks for the video.

Dale, upon tear down I discovered the governor bearing located at the L/H outboard side was bad. It had rusted and was pitted badly. Hopefully yours isn't as badly damaged.

Just bought a 54 JD60. Can you shift on fly or do you have to stop? I had a WD45 before, but it had a foot clutch. Still learning to 60

Did you ever see that wasp fly out of battery box just as you were hooking up the battery?
