Just three years after its launch, the Genesis G70 has been refreshed with sharp new looks and better tech, but it loses its six-speed manual transmission.

Forrest Jones drives through southern California in a 2022 Genesis G70 to determine whether Hyundai's luxury brand is finally good enough to dethrone the German establishment: Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. The refreshed Genesis G70 delivers an engaging driving experience and a terrific interior. But is it the right compact luxury sedan for you?

Looks so good in white. I usually don’t care for blacked-out wheels, but man does it work here! Love the updated G70!

And—Genesis needs their own dealerships!

I would purchase a Genesis over a BMW or an Audi (I currently own a BMW 5 series). The quality of the G70 - in fact the entire Genesis lineup - seems to be on par. Next to Lexus, the reliability (and warranty) exceeds either one.

I purchased my 2019 Genesis G70 3.3 T April 2019.
I first test drove BMW and Mercedes.
Neither of those vehicles did anything for me. Even though they were new vehicles, they felt old (2019 model year).
After 65K miles and no issues, I know that I made the right choice.
I admit that I do prefer the new front end over that of my 2019, but I prefer the rear end of my 2019 better.
Of course I liked to have the larger infotainment screen.
Just had my 65K miles scheduled maintenance yesterday, only $54.99.
At these prices, I don't mind taking my Genesis G70 to a Hyundai dealership for service.
A vanilla latte is not worth $400!

I love Genesis and their value proposition. This facelift is super nice but needs the 3D gauge cluster and the power trunk lid.

You're going to have to redo the entire video because you kept saying "First Edition" instead of "Launch Edition". 🤣

I have been following Genesis for several years and I think they are quickly moving up the ladder because of cost, quality of interior and all of the upgrades. I would purchase one!
I currently own a Audi A6 Prestige which is very very nice and I love all the aftermarket upgrades available🔥🔥🔥

I hope next time you say Lexus/toyota or Acura/Honda. But this is A+ car except I wish it was a little bigger

I love me some MB, BMW, and AUDI. But I believe that Genesis has become very respectable in the luxury car space, and deserve to be in that conversation. Therefore, I'd gladly choose Genesis over those other models without feeling less than. Thanks for the review.

I tested 330i, A4, and IS350 before the purchase of my G70. I actually paid for a 330i with 10k miles. It drives great, but the check engine light was on when I was driving it home, so I know I must return it. The BMW/Audi interior feels cheap plastic, it squeaks when I push here and there. The G70 interior build is much better, and 3.3t definitely drives better than the non-sport version german cars. Lexus is super comfortable but so outdated. I will buy it maybe when I get 10 years older.

If they made a performance model that had carbon fiber hood, fenders, roof, and trunk then get rid of the swirled aluminum trim pieces this would almost be perfect.

nice review. am between the TLX S and this car. Have heard good about both. I'd love to see a stick shift option, a panoramic roof and drop down rear seat and a back trunk and window that open together so I can put a mountain bike in the back. The Ac has it on looks, though. It just looks more athletic and tougher than the Genesis.

I guess I'm purchasing another 2022 Lexus ES 300H. Genesis designs are amazing, but Lexus quality, efficiency, comfort is legendary— especially for the same cost.

Did Forrest address the Brakes? Others complain they are a weak point.

Where I live there are way to many Audi and BMW’s they are to common and don’t stand out so I bought a G70. I wish this car had the GV70 gauge cluster and the car would be near perfect. The 4 cylinder car would benefit having the GV 70 311 hp engine vs the 2 liter engine. This car will out run the type s Acura and it’s more comparable to the BMW M340I.
