Looks like a great lens! How would you compare it to the Nikon 40mm f/2 ?

Lovely video gents. Everyone wants a smaller 35mm f2 with an aperture ring on the Zf - not sure that can have better image quality than the f1.8 S (or this Yongnuo for that matter). Maybe a mark 2 of the 35 f1.8 S is the smartest move

The Nikon has a wider angle, less chromatic aberration and at f/2.8 is sharper. To me, the "S" line 35/1.8S is good enough for all professional work. The "angle" and "focal length" raise the question if the 35/1.8S has suppression of focus breathing. That would interest movie makers, maybe. I never verified it. The point behind that remark is that the 35mm focal length and f/1.8 of f/2 maximum aperture are defined in the trade since ur-times for infinity focus distance. Focusing closer by with a "normal" lens makes the focal length longer and consequently the aperture number smaller. (The aperture breathing in f/numbers happens relative to the focus breathing. As the f increases and the entry pupil diameter stays the same, the number increases too, because the pupil diameter is f/number, so 35mm/1.8 gives an entry pupil of 19.44mm and if you focus closer by that stays the same. So if f increases and f/n=19.44 stays the same, then n increases too.)
To suppress focus breathing, a prime lens must become a subtle zoom lens. Internal focusing combined with a subtle zoom effect would address the breathing.

But, it's simply possible that both lenses lie a bit about focal length and the Nikon simply is a bit wider. As per above, for people who never went through photography school, a lot of "lies" - definitions and traditions of the trade - remain hidden, unsuspected.

Just ordered this one from the Yongnuo website for $259. 35mm isn't a favorite focal length for me but this will be nice to have in the kit and maybe I'll start doing a bit more street photography now that I'll have this.

When Nikon was developing the Z system and new lenses with it, my message was: I want (a) less chromatic aberration (CA) more than I want more sharpness and (b) a consistency in colour character. Removal of one kind of CA in post has become better since, and colour character can be corrected with a profile for each lens. But if I can do my work without addressing these issues, then that saves me time. Once or many times or both.

I was shocked when you said that the Nikon 35 was $900 so I went and checked, here in the U.S. you can get a new one for $696 on sale. This is almost a no brainer, no way is the Nikon worth that big of a price difference. Might be harder decision at around $400.

Let's not forget "interoperability" that we expect from Nikon, even after firmware updates. My Z cameras have had repeated updates and each could have been an issue for 3rd party lenses. Of my 7 Z lenses (6* "S" line) 5 or 6 have had 1 or more firmware updates.

I wish I had seen this video a month ago. I purchased a “like new” used copy of the Nikon Z 35mm f1.8S from MPB for about US$500. (It truly was like new, with originally packaging and no evidence of use.) From Nikon, it shows a full list price of $849, and is currently on sale for $699. Even comparing it to the used one, the Yongnuo is basically half the price with arguably better IQ and features.

A good review. I know they are different focal lengths. How does lens performance compare with Nikon budget lenses. The 28mm and 40mm. After a period of using them I think they are ok lenses. Nice colour and 3D separation with shallow depth of field. Would be interested to know your thoughts on Nikkor 35mm f1.4. Is it as some people say. More closely related to Nikon's F mount primes rather than the S series lenses.

In Australia I can get the Yongnuo new for $470. The Nikon 35mm f1.8 new is $1449. At that price difference you really have to think about the close to $1000 difference.
