- Historical Beacon’s Bungalow on the GOSABA island, where Rabindranath Tagore visited in 1932 to meet Scottish national Daniel Hamilton, a businessman-cum-social worker. He made Bengal his second home. Hamilton had built this single-storey bungalow in 1903 on GOSABA island Sunderbans
It was built on solid wooden stilts. Hamilton was one of the richest men in British India headed Mackinnon & McKenzie, shipping company, bought 40sqkm (roughly 90,000 acres) land from three islands of Gosaba, Rangabelia and Satjelia. He pioneered the rural & economic development of Gosaba, Hamilton began with helping people weave shawls,encouraged farmers, helped them form cooperatives to store crops, to learn cattle farming, fishery, horticulture, weaving,carpentry to develop the rural economy. Had built primary schools there.
- In Dec 1932, Rabindranath Tagore visited Gosaba stayed at Beacon’s Bungalow. Left a deep impression on Tagore.

- Routes to Reach Sundarban From Kolkata: There are two main routes to Reach Sundarbans from Kolkata.
1)Basanti Highway 2)Baruipur-Canning Highway.
These two are state highways and maintained periodically to let the tourists visit the Sundarbans without any hassle.

Kolkata Basanti Highway is the Best route to get into the Sundarbans is through Kolkata Basanti Highway. It is less crowded than Baruipur-Canning Highway.
For smooth traveling, use this route to visit Sundarbans. Basanti Road is linked to Eastern Metropolitan Bypass near Science City in Kolkata and from Science city, Kolkata to Godkhali Sundarbans distance is 103 KMS and it takes about 3 hours to reach Godkhali.

You will find several tea and snacks shops on this route. You can stop at any of these shops and get refreshed.

2)Kolkata Baruipur Canning Highway
The second route you can use to reach Sundarbans is Kolkata Baruipur Canning Highway. The distance is the same as Kolkata-Basanti highway but as it goes through main markets of the towns you will encounter heavy rush. Especially at Baruipur and Canning.

It takes more time to reach Sundarbans via Baruipur Highway then Basanti highway.The Two Entry Points to Sundarbans

There are two main entry points to reach Sundarban from Kolkata.
1)Godkhali and 2)Jhorkhali

1)#Godkhali
You can use this entry point as its located just opposite to Gosaba the main market of Sundarban.

In Godkhali there is a huge parking space for private cars and buses where you can park your vehicles with nominal charges.

As well as you will get public transport options such as Busses and Autos from Godkhali to Canning.

2)JhorKhali
Jhorkhali is a less popular entry point to Sundarban. You will get public transport to get Jhorkhali from Canning, there are no markets like Gosaba in Jhorkhali and parking space is not as huge as Godkhali.

There is one more reason why we always prefer Godkhali over Jhorkhali – The distance of Sajnekhali Forest office from Jhorkhali is 5KMS more then Godkhali.

How to Reach Kolkata to Sundarban: There are options to reach Sundarban from Kolkata.

Via Local Train – It the best option for indie tourists who want to save some money on travel. By choosing this option you can reach Godkhali with just 150Rs/Person.

To reach Sundarbans via train you have to catch the Sealdah-Canning Local train from Sealdah South station. You will get trains every hour. The best train that we use for our tourists is 7:40 Sealdah-Canning Train.
- From Canning you have to catch a share auto or if you afford you can reserve an auto or car to Godkhali. Via Private Vehicle or Bus – The second and more comfortable option is to hire a private vehicle from Kolkata to Sundarban. If you hire a private vehicle you can reach Goidkhali by 3 to 3:30 hours.

Travel by Air
The nearest airport to reach Sundarbans is the Netaji Subhash International Airport at Dumdum, Kolkata, is nearly 112 kilometers from the Sundarbans.
Travel by Rail
The nearest railway station is Canning. From Sealdah (Kolkata) there are many local trains to Canning throughout the day and then may travel with bus to Namkhana, Raidighi, Sonakhali and Najat from where motorboat services are available for Sundarbans
