A close friend is named Bender. He told me about this several years ago.
He discovered this sordid story while tracing his roots. Fearing they actually were shirttail family he dug deep and learned they had used other names before they moved to Kansas. They were NOT really Benders.
The name does originate in Germany. They probably had known of Germans who were actually Benders.
My friend is adamant it should be made clear they had used his surname as an alias.

The only one who could speak fluent English was the daughter, Kate. The brother was actually near her age in his mid twenties, not a small kid.

There have always been serial killers. The first in America was probably some of the first on the continent, but who knows. The oldest record of a serial killer is actually one of a pre Homo sapiens humanoid creature that killed its victims and through them in a cave.

This is an interesting, immersive film, but do not treat it as horror, and most certainly not as the true story of the Bender "family" (who probably were not a real family at all). It is a quiet psychological drama with some metaphysical elements, and a touch of the macabre. There is a *small* element of the core story of the Benders within (a group of apparently related people, who definitely are a family in the film version, open an inn in the American Wild West during late XIX century, and proceed to entrap and murder lonely travellers, who stop by in the night) - however, it is very far away from the known facts of the true events, and is better treated as something of a very loose fantasy, peripherally inspired by history.

It is quite involving, slow and - rather unusually, considering the subject - sometimes almost peaceful in its tone. You can enjoy it as fiction, but do not expect it to reflect the real tale of the Benders.
