IMPORTANT!! Don't forget….When applying the dressing with a gloved hand, only tape 3 sides of the dressing to allow air to still escape. Chest tubes have 2 places that they can be placed, if its for the drainage of air, it will be in the 2nd intercostal space, If it is for drainage, it should be placed between the 8th and 9th intercostal spaces. Sometimes tubing can look like a Y and be placed in BOTH. =) Thanks ReMar for this wonderful review

Speaking as a previously certified critical care nurse who worked with chest tubes on a regular basis it is important to realize that there may be some intermittent bubbling if there is an air leak in the patient. If continuous, the air leak is in the system.

I appreciate that you were straight and to the point with the information that we need to know. You had a wonderful summarized explanation of the material! Thank you so much :)

VERY helpful! There is so much information (and none of it in layman's terms) that I get lost in the information and find myself having difficulty categorizing everything. Thank you SO MUCH!

I heard that you are only supposed to apply petroleum gauze and not just any gauze for the dressing when tube comes out...and to tape it on three sides so that air can still escape from chest..otherwise air will keep building up (with four side taped) creating tension pneumothorax. So, I guess it'll be prudent to have that Petroleum gauze by the pt side from the get-go..
