RED TARANTULA Confusion! NEW TARANTULA Species Madness.

preview_player
Показать описание
Our beloved red tarantula species from Chile, formerly called Euathlus species Red - now known under the name of Homoeommma chilensis has gotten another name, Homoeomma bicolor. A tarantula species native to the central/southern region of Chile, South America.
This is not the first or the last time it will happen. Two independent groups of researcher described the very same species of tarantula - therefore a lot of resources were wasted just because the communication could have been better.

That is so sad and frustrating. I don't understand how this happens, it's not like there are hundreds of taxonomists dedicated to tarantulas. There should be a database where Theraphosidae taxonomists can see what others are working on and decide where to best put their resources. I would be so frustrated if this were me, since I could have been putting all my time and effort into another species who is long overdue for proper identification.
Thanks for a great year, Martin. I wish you, and yours, the very best over the holidays. Looking forward to what you have in store for us in 2019! Take care.

Now... which magazine is the better one? At first glance: Spixiana does have an Impact Factor, albeit a small one (0.3 something), while for the BTS journal, I couldn't find one. Not a lot I can find out about how rigorous the peer-review process is for either of them. With Spixiana being a much more broadly scoped journal (anything zoology and taxonomy), I would suspect that behind the scenes of the BTS journal, the better experts for tarantula taxonomy will be available. Is there peer review in the BTS Journal?

I hope things improve in T community soon. Maybe, a system can be put in place where everybody can see what species are worked on... conference calls set up and findings shared etc.

Organic spray paint is another option. Use A. chalcodes as your blank canvas as they are really cheap. Put the T in soapy water to wash of the paint and create a new design.

Communication is the problem of most of the world faces. Marriages break up, countries go to war, large businesses give customers a bad time when the customer is shuffled around because no one knows what one dept. says to a customer. On and on. it goes. Time has not helped to improve this and frankly, no one cares anymore. Very sad but this research problem will never improve. But you have said the truth. Just do the best you can because you are very important as You. Ty

Isnt there an international organization that approves names for tarantulas? they should over see projects to make sure names dont get changed without cause.

The politics of science is unfortunate, but I agree, communication is key.

You are right, but the sad fact is there is too much competition in the tarantula hobby. People should talk, but don't. This is one of the reasons why I have a few friends I know on Facebook and just get on with others in the community and avoid getting too involved in it. Sooner or later someone will have a problem with me and I really can't be bothered with that crap. It's unfortunate that the Stuart Longhorn paper came out without Stuart knowing about the Chile researchers, as he seems a decent man. I hope when the synonymy paper comes out that the name H. chiliensis stands, as that would be cruel on the Chillian researchers.

I am not sure if the same thing happens in the T scientific community, but on the myrmecologist community, the feeling I have is that the young scientist are trying to find and name new species as that will give them the advantage over others. The more papers you put out there the better and under your name and so, cooperation isn't seen as beneficial. 😕

I know what you mean. That sucks. I agree we should all work together. Great Topic bud. Hope you have a good Holiday and a happy new Year.

Saying one wins if perfect English. It gets your point across fine. Don't worry

Hi, Martin ! I believe that the priority in such research and scientific work should be given to those who study animals from the country in which he lives!
These people from Chile, all their life watching these spiders, I think they know these animals better than people who live in a completely different part of the world.
But you are right! There should be a dialogue between scientists, why the British colleagues did not make an official request in Chile about these species?
What they did not know, I think this is no excuse, especially since Chile, Mexico, the United States, have their own quite strong and serious communities of tarantulas. And everyone knows about them, was it possible to make a request? It is not clear why this is all happening ....

It won’t work publishing is huge in the science community and fame goes to the one who wins the race. Everyone wants the fame of publication so it best to keep under raps your work in hopes your first🤷🏼‍♂️💯

A great shame, but unfortunately the human race thrives on competition and without it we as a whole do not evolve

And in the same time, online shops keep continue to sell "Aphonopelma sp. new river" or "Grammostola sp. north"...
There are hundreds of undescribed species, how it is possible to work on the same species like this???
I personaly heard of this story after reading the journal of the BTS I received.
