One of the best interviews since the book release. Unusually for a largely sympathetic interview it challenged the author to expand and add nuance and context beyond what was even in the book. More common is the interview to simplify and essentalize, which I don't think works well for this topic, this book, or this author.
Made possible by length of interview and interviewer familiar with the topic area from a more academic and less activist perspective.

Some of the intelligently critical interviews have also been useful.
I thought the Lede podcast also was useful in the challenges it posed...

In systems theory a writer named David Peter Stroh has written about vicious identity conflict and this resonates with what he describes. These are dynamic systems with numerous feedback loops that maintain the identity trap. As Mounk states the outcomes are not what people hope for.

A key feature is the universal practice of reifying theories. They become beliefs and then are installed as a belief forming a lens on reality. That forms frames and metaphors that people then adopt to describe their view of reality to others.

Another aspect of looking at this is the field of cognitive psychology and linguistics as developed by George Lakoff. We think in frames and those are expressed through metaphors and scenarios.

We do these things rather than defining problems and solving them within a dynamic systems framework.

I would venture that bad ideas come out of the university not because of social isolation, given that many of the students have many ordinary, uneducated relatives, but that the students are so young and have little life or work experience where they could test their white tower ideas.

Great content! But please work on your sound settings! Was unbearable to listen to Pinker episode…

Fantastic interview.

Please work on audio, though. It’s harsh on the ears.

There is little open enquiry in the uk. This is partly ideology, but it is partly laziness on the part of research academics, for whom teaching gets in the way of their chief priority (research). Blowing the dust off old notes and a stifling culture feed on each other.

Very disappointed in the interviewer here. You have a GUEST and you are the HOST. Your 'stories and anecdotes' are not what your audience are here to listen to. Get over yourself.

God, even noticing your mannerisms of closing your eyes 9:31 for pompous effect. Done. Shame as you have such a good guest.
