Thank you for making this reaction video. To me, a Gen X middle aged man now, Husker Du was “Nirvana” long before people had ever heard of Kurt Cobain.

Man, the drumming and vocals on this track are beyond outstanding, man. I always loved this one!

One of my favorite songs, I fully appreciate the utter intensity this version brings to it! I actually attended the same college as Bob (Macalester) and my ears are likely still ringing from a dorm show I saw back in ‘81. I recall friends saying Rubber Soul was one of his favorite albums. Though I’m more into the Sugar phase of Mould’s sound, this is hard core punk that still keeps a good sense of melody.

Bar none, this is the greatest cover song ever recorded.

Great video! Always happy to see more folks talking about Husker Du. Like a lot of their early stuff, this song is just a beautiful explosion of noise and melody.

This is the song that changed my life forever. And, as one critic put it, If the Byrds version is about a good acid trip, Husker Du's is about a bad one. The anger, the fear, the angst is unparalleled.

The bass and drums are just as amazing. Transcendence doesn’t even begin to describe this. And I’ve loved it since I was 16. I’m 50.

This single was my first encounter with HÜSKER DÜ, at that time i had no clue about THE BYRDS ( mega fan now), but i became an obsessive Hüsker fan, still am. And here they are, in their full glory, making this a Hüsker Dü song, even if it's written by Gene Clark (i am his fan too)

Wow - that's a deep cut. 😂 I know the song but it's not exactly one of Hüsker Dü's most famous songs. Being from 1984, it's at the time when the band started doing more melodic stuff with Zen Arcade being released the same year. I assume it wasn't included on that album since it didn't fit into the concept of the album.

Shawn, I never heard of this band. This song has a rough rocking sound with a steady tempo, I agree on the solid instrumentation. You are right about the abstract lyrics, it has meaning. The vocals are sung in a rough manner as they express the lyrics. Very interesting version. Your comments are on point to describe the song. Your rating is high, and I can see why, this song rocks. A rocking rollicking song Myles.

I agree it's an amazing version, there is a nod to the British Psychedelic band the Small Faces, in their Rain Grey town of London.

Thanks for another great reaction, Shawn! And thanks for the new patreon for this fantastic cover! For me, the original song is one of the best singles of all time. It's just unbeatable. But this version is fire! Agree that's pure Bob Mould, heart and soul! Vocais and guitar are frantic. You can barely understand what he's singing, but the passion is all there. Love it.

I didn't know this cover. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I love both The Byrds and Husker Duh. I've actually have requested songs by both in the channel.
I must say that I like the original better but I like the fierce punk vocals and the noisy guitars of this one.
By the way, funny first request, eight MYLES high, haha

The Byrds' original is among the absolute greatest rock recordings, IMO. Husker Du's version is as good. Best single of the 1980s, with Jesus and Mary Chain's "Upside Down" No. 2.
