Dogs are one of the biggest enigmas of domestication. Despite decades of study, scientists still haven't figured out when or where they arose. Until recently, most archaeologists accepted that the origin of the dog dates back to the late Upper Palaeolithic around 14,000 years ago. However, the antiquity of the domestication of the dog from a wolf ancestor is probably much older. It happened when people were still hunter-gatherers. All in all, dogs have a far more interesting history of domestication than had been thought.
