History of PlayStation Box Art & Cases: An Over Explained Analysis

As some of you might have guessed, I enjoy physical video games. And there are times where I ponder the various iterations PlayStation platforms have gone through with their own games. So today we're going to have a boring, drawn out conversation surrounding the history of PS1 long boxes, jewel cases, PS2 games, those PS3 cases and the rebranding, even the little PS Vita ones! And trust me, I do also rant about the anemic PS4 and PS5 cases. What am I doing. Please help me, this was a bad idea.

I love your appreciation for playstation as a whole. You deep dive in a way that's not repetitive. Keep doing what you're doing Mystic! You are appreciated!

For PS1, there is another unique jewel case for Arc the Lad Collection which had 6 discs in a dual case. I thought that as pretty neat back in the days.

We had completely different cases for the PS1 in the UK. We did not have the bog standard CD jewel cases, we had specially made jewel cases which were much thicker.

There is another PS2 case that you missed to mention. The launch games (around 30) have a different case without a memory card holder and in the center of the case says 'push here' instead of just 'push' and is shaped like a ying yang shape instead of a triangle.
Some examples to look are Tekken Tag Tournament, SSX, MIDNIGHT CLUB, etc

The bulky jewel square thick PS1 cases will always be my fav. Could always see the name of the game down the side perfectly.

In Europe we have blue cases, as standard, but we also have a couple of colored ones, games in the first year for the most part was black cases, same to US ones. Orange cases for eyeToy, red for Buzz, some games like Singstar Legends and GT4 had white cases, MGS 2 had a seethrough case.

One thing I love is that you straighten up every disc when you open a case.

I thought I was the only one who did this.

As a PS1 game collector who grew up in the UK and has now been living in Japan for over a decade, I find it interesting how US PS1 cases are so different to the cases for Europe and Japan. I don't think there were any longboxes in Europe and Japan and only US cases have that ridged look down the side. Even for single disc games, the square cases in Europe are all much chunkier- about the width of 2 CD jewel cases (with double layered cases for 3 and 4 disc games). Japan has a mixture of chunky square cases and thin jewel cases.

Also imo the silver band on the cases for platinum games in Europe is much better looking than the vivid green of US greatest hits.

I got my PSP very late, in 2013. In the stores, they had these re-releases with an orange box in the front, the spine and orange box around the back art. It was called "PSP Essentials" so most of my PSP games are like that 😀

You are definitely one of my favourite channels for years now. Keep doing your thing.

I don't know why, but I like this over explained conversation about box art, it's evolution and revolution of its history, the great classical Era of ps1 ps2 then, the interesting times of early ps3, and the standardization of the modern Era, late half ps3 and ps4.
I love this overview

Im happy to have found your channel.. partly because I share your exact feelings on PS3 cases, box art, first prints, and spine branding. I too struggled with how I would organize my PS3 games until I decided to display them in chronological order based on release date. This keeps a uniform look, provides a sense of how games progressed through the years AND allows for quick comparison to other titles released around the same time. Thanks for providing me with hours of relaxing, informative videos on one of my favorite things.. the Playstation universe. Hopefully this inspires you to rearrange your entire library LoL and we can watch a timelapse of you spending three days looking up release dates. 😅

This was a great video. It's interesting to see the evolution of Playstation cases, designs, etc.

Also, great choice of jazz music playing in the background. Added to the mood and vibe of the video.

I really enjoy these sorts of videos that look back at PS history, whether it's things like this or events or whatever. As we get closer to the rumoured showcase, maybe you could do a video reacting to some old E3 press conferences.
