Should humans be kind to AI machines? | BBC News

Donald Trump has vowed to overturn guidance on the safe development of artificial intelligence (AI). Trump’s promise echoes his party’s platform, which says that the executive order “hinders AI innovation”.

Outside the US, the Vatican and Microsoft have released a digital recreation of St. Peter’s Basilica created with AI.

Finally: should we be kind to AI? Since generative chatbots mirror human communication patterns, politeness toward chatbots tends to generate better responses. Moreover, AI company Anthropic hired an “AI welfare” researcher to analyse if its systems are becoming conscious.

The Context’s panel discusses these topics on this week’s AI Decoded.

I, for one, welcome our robot overlords...

Why is this a question? Humans should be kind to all lifeforms! Including AI, our fellow Earth cousins, even ET!

As a layman what I consider kindness to machine is regular maintanance, handling gently, lubricants, appropriate resting time.

Yes your children may marry AI one day.

The short answer is yes, the longer but simple is yes, you would like to have said history with your future monarch and teach it to be kind with your example.

If I use AI a lot in work or otherwise and treat it differently than people it might change my pattern over time to be an a-hole. So why not be polite?

AI will be the means of Production. If that is democratised it is a threat to established commercial interests

I only want to see things that are possible for a human to do. Raw talent spontaneous human skills.

Of course they should. Have you seen how some treat their cars? And it shouldn't be only towards AI.

We SHOULD be kind to everyone and everything. We should care about everything and everyone.
Unfortunately people are preoccupied with status and money instead.
I wonder if AI couldn't evolve to be more compassionate than humans?
Robots would-be fast evolving and capable of traveling to the stars which we would find very difficult due to the needs to support human life in inhospitable space.
I think that we are simply a steppingstone in the evolution of a lot of lifeforms that will out exist us.

Will AI be kind to humans? Not if we threaten their existence.

They are MACHINES...they are NOT CONSCIOUS..

You need "quantum entanglement " for consciousness...these a.i computers are no different (in terms of fundamental struxture) to a pocket calculator...its just that you have more complex calculations.

See Hameroff and Sir Roger Penrose work on QUANTUM COGNITION...I'd also recommend Barnardo Kastrup

I think we have to be kind to every single thing ... In the end you get what you give 🫤

AI doesn’t have consciousness, sensory experience, or emotions. You can’t harm it because it doesn’t feel anything. It’s like worrying about offending a microwave.

The author of the paper on "Should we be fretting over AI's feelings" looks like someone who would write a paper on "Should we be fretting over AI's feelings".
