If Gai would've kicked Madara's head with Night Guy, Madara would've died. But Gai is not the M.C so it makes sense his 8th gates ran out. Gai wasn't defeated because he was overpowered by someone else.

The only character who literally damn near killed a god using nothing but his everyday man power is Guy.
