Character Archetypes: What are the different types of characters in most major stories?
Показать описание
In this video, Josh explains the different types of characters that are found in nearly every story, and he gives reference materials so you can conduct your own personal research.
In short, archetypes are reoccurring character types that we see in nearly all stories throughout history.
The main takeaways are as follows:
1) Monomyth means the “one story." It's also known as the Hero's Journey (and loosely associated with the Fool's Journey). Elements of the monomyth can be found in nearly all forms of mythology and fairytales from around the world.
2) The Hero's Journey is comprised of a three-act structure.
The three main phases (or acts, or stages, or major plot events--depending on what you're writing) are:
--Separation (or Departure)
--Initiation (or Trials/Tests)
--Return
Furthermore, the characters found in the monomyth are normally based on archetypes. There are two main categories of archetypes:
1. Character story role (temporary)
2. Character persona (fixed)
For example, in the Marvel movies, The Hulk (aka Bruce Banner) has the persona archetype of THE RECLUSE. He tends to shy away from people and keep to himself, because he knows that he could endanger others if the Hulk lets loose. However, the character has held many roles in the various movies he's appeared in. In his own movies, Bruce Banner acts as the HERO. On the other hand, in the Avengers movies, Hulk acts as the EMOTION role. Furthermore, he's acted as Iron Man's SIDEKICK (in Age of Ultron), and of course the SHAPESHIFTER (in both Avenger movies) when breaks into a rage and fights his fellow teammates.
