Today we will be talking about Stomach cancer.
The stomach is a vital organ in our digestive tract. It is located in our upper abdomen and connects the esophagus with the small intestine. It functions as a reservoir to temporarily hold our meals and at the same time aids in the digestion of our food.
Gastric cancer occurs when the cells in the stomach wall undergo uncontrolled division to produce a malignant tumor.

Stomach cancer is the 7th most common cancer in men and the 9th most common cancer in women in our local population.
Each year, Stomach cancer takes more than 300 lives in Singapore.

The Risk factors of gastric cancer are
- Long term stomach inflammation
- smoking
- family history of gastric cancer
- dietary factors: diet high in salt, smoked and preserved foods, and a diet low in fruits and vegetables

As with most cancer, early stomach cancers tend to be silent.
However if you do suffer from these symptoms, then please seek consultation with your family doctor or specialist.
- upper abdominal pain
- bloatedness or indigestion after meals
- loss of appetite and loss of weight
- persistent nausea and vomiting
- persistent heartburn symptoms
- black tarry stools

Recently, There have been some exciting developments in the field of gastric cancer screening coming from Singapore called gastroclear.
Gastroclear is a blood test that actually detects abnormal levels of microRNA released from Gastric cancer cells.
It has been said to be able to detect up to 87% of all gastric cancer and is being evaluated currently to be rolled out for population-wide screening in the primary care scene.
I’m keeping my eyes on this development. Really exciting stuff.

So How can you prevent stomach cancer?
It's all about the lifestyle, isn’t it?
If you’ve watched enough of my videos, you will have realized already that many illnesses and diseases can be treated with lifestyle changes.

- stop smoking
- avoid processed food ( I have shared more in my previous video on why you should not take processed food )
- reduce salt intake
- increase the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables in your meals
- maintaining a healthy weight by staying physically active

If your doctor suspects that you may be suffering from gastric cancer, then we will refer you for diagnostic testings like
- gastric endoscopy
- barium meal X-rays.

Adopt a healthy lifestyle to keep gastric cancer away from you.
Take note of the symptoms and do seek medical consultation when you develop symptoms suggestive of gastric cancer.
The last thing you want to do is to ignore your symptoms.
Early detection ensures early diagnosis, and often that leads to a better outcomes.

last year i got an ulcer and because of that, it was hard for me to eat and i lost a lot of weight. once it went away, i was okay for a while. recently, i’ve been having bad cramps, nausea on a regular basis, loss of appetite, fatigue, and i get full very easily now. i’m not sure what to do

Ive had diarrhea for 7 months today during the beginning i would get really bad heartburn and the burps that burn your throat i just had normal diarrhea for 4 months its fully water it started a week ago along witg stomach pain especially in the morning when i wake up then ive only gotten the stomach ache 2 times during the day also i havent been able to eat in 3 days but a yogrut if i try to get i gag i also have only pooped one time and it was barley any i dont think anything food is in my stomach tho i also just a random stomach pain for like min then i had to throw but i just dryheaved and right after that it went away im just quit weed about a week ago and Thats when the stomach pain and not bring able eat

hello doc, I hope you will notice me. i have a sudden sharp pain above my belly button sometimes the first pain that i felt above the belly button was last year November 2021 after my 1st dose of Pfizer covid vaccine. and sometimes, there's also a sudden pain that comes and goes in the right side of my abdomen. what could it be doc? i am planning to get an endoscopy when i have enough money for it. but i hope for the meantime, you could share your knowledge about what I'm experiencing.

I was recently diagnosed with chronic gastritis with focal intestinal metaplasia, due to h pylori and nasaids, in 2019 H Plyroi was eradicated and tests were done in 2021 to check for h Plyroi came back negative, however now there’s new diagnosis, Intestinal Metaplasia with Chronic Gastritis, will this definitely lead or develops into gastric cancer, my doctor only prescribed acid blockers, can you elaborate on the severity of this diagnosis?

Probably a dumb question but Im not a science person at all, if your parents had colon cancer are you at higher risk of only having colon cancer or other organs too?
