Did you know that you can make 3D Replica's as well? You make a ball out of the silicone and then place your object all the way into the ball so that it is enclosed. Let it cure and then remove it. Once it's removed you dust the mold with cornstarch and pack the 3D mold with air dry clay (or even more of the silicone mixture), let it cure and remove it. if you go to the craft store and into the cake decorating section you can get an idea of what a 3D mold looks like and go from there. I refinish/repair furniture and when I get a piece that has a missing applique or embellishment of some kind, I will mold an existing one so that I can make a repair that matches.

You dont have to add as much cornstarch if you want a more flexible mold. I use this recipie for my 3d molds, and I learned that the quantity of cornstarch added determines the stiffness of the finished silicone. For me, less cornstarch and a more flexible mold works best. But its a handy tip to know that theres no set consistency you have to acheive with this recipie, the silicone still sets (it just might take a bit longer) and you can acheive the best results for you.

Make a pancake of corn starch on your mixing surface first, then squirt the silicone into the middle of it. Wear nitrile gloves and slowly fold the cornstarch into the silicone, gradually adding more cornstarch and kneading until the consistency is not sticky. Saves you from ruining your forks and messing up your rings.

It's a great technique for making inexpensive home made molds. I'm a model builder and have been using it for years for making quick and inexpensive molds for low detail parts.

Instead of air dry clay, use plaster. Wet the mold with water mixed with a few drops of dish soap, pour in the plaster. Vibrate the filled mold gently to release any air bubbles trapped on the mold surface, under the plaster. The result is highly detailed castings of the original part. Soak the plaster castings (when fully dry) with watered down PVA or white glue, set aside to dry. This strengthens the plaster, making it a tad more durable.

Thank you so much for this!!! I thrifted an intricate mirror from the 1800s and because of the age, a corner broke. I've been trying to figure out how to make a silicone mold of the other corner to repair it. This is perfect timing! Thanks again!

I have and I love them, I have also filled them with hot glue when I ran out of clay! I do use gorilla hot glue so I've never had a problem. And at my craft shows I use plaster in them and have a place where children can paint them. They are so versatile.

You're right about the mucky mess. I used my hands too soon, but I didn't use the water and detergent method on your recommendation. You're practical, smart and experienced and I'll consider you a trusted soul. Thanks 🎉!

A quick hint on preventing the object from sticking to the mold. I spray some dish soap (mixed with water) onto the objects you are making molds of. Just spray some on, then let it dry. When you make the mold, the object is guaranteed to NOT stick to the mold.
It is usually not a problem but every so often the object is made of metal that wants to stick to the silicone. Certain resins and paint can have that quality too.

You. Are. Awesome. This is my favorite YouTube Channel and you, Deidre, are my favorite crafter. You think of the needs of us crafters looking for alternative ways to do our projects and crafts! I always get so inspired to think differently about what I can add to my projects, and I save so much money because of your genius crafting tips and tricks! I am truly grateful and appreciative for your perspective. You're humble and show mistakes you've made but end up turning them into gorgeous art! Every project I've tried that you have done has worked. (Starting with decoupage tricks to every transfer method I've watched on your channel) And one more thing...when you say "hello YouTube friends" I just love it! I feel like you're my crafting buddy! When my roommate hears your voice they say, "Are you hanging out with Deidre again?" Of course! I can't get enough!!! Many, many thanks from a YouTube friend in Atlanta!

Just for the money you can save it’s well worth the time to make dozens of molds. Our homes are filled with thousands of objects to duplicate in such a short time. Think of the savings from shipping alone, not to mention the high cost of the molds themselves. You can customize your artwork to fit your style and motif or personalize it for a special someone! Can’t wait to try it.

How great that was to watch! Thank you so much, will be finding my baby doll heads to make molds of. Put them in natural knot holes in wood pieces found in old dead trees 🌳 that are falling apart. This is going to be awesome, wondering how I would do this now thanks to you I know! Thanks again. Shirl K - Texas

Desire, if I didn't have to work today I'd be in my craft room making molds! I've already bought the silicone & have a mental list of things I want to duplicate but was hesitant about the best process to make the molds. After watching this video I'm not hesitant anymore! Thank you for inspiring me!
