Streaming services are planning a new payment model where actors, directors, producers and screenwriters will be paid based on how well their tv show or movie performs instead of big upfront payments.

I don't think the actors have always been the problem. Bad writing, bad advertising, and bad production are to blame mostly

Main problem, the platforms control exposure for the show. They could theoretically sandbag a show until the bonus window closes, then advertise it and make their money afterwards.

This reeks of potential for studios to royally screw over the actors

Something tells me the billion dollar companies aren't struggling as much as they'd like you to believe.

Actors are almost never the problem, but the upper management ALWAYS is.

Going the way of videogames. They demand blockbusters every single time with massive profits and leave no room for small projects that won't get as much play time or engagement

Something similar was done in the past where actors got a percent of profits from the film made. So what film companies did is make it so that the film never turned a profit with "expenses". Actors then started to ask to be payed up front to avoid this issue.

I’ve seen like 2 movies in my entire life that were ruined by bad acting, but about 700 that were ruined by bad writing. It’s not the talent of the actors you need to worry about.

Edit: a lot of people are saying that “talent” includes the writing. It took 5 seconds of googling to determine that no, Netflix doesn’t pay writers based on this model.

Writers are criminally underpaid, though, so a merit based pay system would actually probably help most dedicated writers. I hope you all learned something!

That's not fair. Those actors still did that work, whether it flops or not!

It's basically going back to the days when artists had to ask for payments by going to the audience with a cap in hand

Idk but most of the time it's not the actress/actor is bad but the bad story itself

Maybe the entire executive suite should take pay cuts if they’re that concerned about rising costs.

Good actors won't wanna do risky movies.

And that just means more sequels and more remakes, and no original movies.

This is why everyone needs a trade union - even actors. Everyone deserves to know upfront how much they will be paid for hired work, and make a decision if the pay is worth their time.

Seems like it would be hard for new actors to break out this way

So shifting over all the risk to employees. A classic.

This is going to make new and interesting ideas a lot rarer because they won't get funded at any point.

Feels like this is just a way of reducing pay towards actors but with a lot more words
