Harper and Mom talking using a mini PODD

Показать описание
As I said yesterday, this week I gained some new insight into our youngest Harper. Harper has very unique communication needs. Her motor skills, while certainly not age appropriate, are rather good and her fine motor and ability to point and isolate is very very good! But her understanding of language is just not there.
Harper is very unhappy most of the time. She cries anytime we try to approach her. She often retreats to covering her head with a blanket for hours on end. She doesn't play with toys -- will only hold very small objects or flash cards.
At first she seems to have major sensory issues which overwhelm her, which is partly true, but I'm learning its most likely she has little concept of what people are saying to her and words/interactions are scary because she just doesn't understand. So she retreats inwards and away. Makes perfect sense to me and it's so important for us to keep in mind as we interact with her. It also gives us some comfort in knowing the reasons behind her behavior as for any parent, having a child you love so much scream at you 98% of the time can be discouraging! 😳
We need to teach Harper language. Slowly. Quietly. Very simply. Of course we have already begun to do this but having more insight to her behavior helps us to not lose hope and just simple trust the process.
We maybe have a moment like in this clip every two weeks. In this moment I had put Harper in a bag on the back of Siah's chair just temporarily. She loved being in a close safe spot. I think that helped make this moment possible and allowing all the stars to align.
Harper is using her book to babble. Just pointing to the symbols and waiting for me to give feed back.
The message is not as important as the interaction. She is exploring and having some human connection and that's exactly what we want!
**Harper is using a tiny little 5x7 PODD on heavy duty laminate. She vomits a few times a day and this makes for easy clean up. We always have a large book with us so that we can model on a full PODD book.
