Coming from a family that never said I love you, this hit different. It was so hard to even start saying it to partners and sometimes still find it hard.

The parents, man. They just say it back immediately. The siblings and friends were confused, concerned, or suspicious but the parents are just happy to hear it. That distant mom was right. Sometimes your kids grow up and go do their own thing and leave you behind and it doesn't mean they don't love you or that you failed as a parent, in fact sometimes it means you did a few things right. Parent-child love is the only kind of love that is meant to be uneven and man is it a trip. My son doesn't initiate saying I love you as much as I do but I know he does.

My Dad died seven years ago and I wish I could tell him one more time. I’m just glad the last time I saw him, I gave him a hug and I told him I loved him. He even said it back, which was rare. Other Immigrant kids can relate to this, I’m sure. Just cause they don’t always express it outwardly, doesn’t mean they don’t hold it in their heart, they do. Miss you Dad!

I lost my dad two years ago and some change and hearing them be able to call their moms and dads to say I love you hearing them back brought crazy tears to my eyes. It's one thing I wish I could tell my dad and one thing I wish I could hear again, even though I know he knows it and I know it. There's just something different about it being said out loud. It's been a while since I've cried about him but this video was a nice trigger for the waterworks. Suffice it to say I've been saying I love you to the people in my life with a lot more intention lately.

I decided (on a whim) to search the word "love" on YouTube.
This is the only video of the first 20 I scrolled through that didn't involve divorced celebrities yelling at each other, songs that describe how painful love is, or same-sex animae characters either 1) fighting the hate in their society, or 2) providing (yet another dysfunctional) example of rape culture.
Apparently, the algorithm wants us to believe the sweetness of love expressed is rare.
Thank you for this example of the positive impact of saying "I love you."
