Do dwarf caiman make good pets?

Despite the name "dwarf", owning either species of dwarf caiman as a pet is a HUGE mistake. These animals are just as vicious and feisty as their larger counterparts and require a substantial amount of time and space to keep happy. Every year, our sanctuary takes in as many as 100 new crocodilians - these animals come from surrenders, law enforcement seizures and even other zoos.

For those seriously considering any species of crocodilian as a pet, please understand that owning these animals is illegal in the majority of the country (without a permit) and for good reason; they belong in the wild or in a sufficient zoological facility.

I had one of these guys in the mid 1970's. They grow incredibly fast for a reptile and are very aggressive all the time. If they get a chance to bite you they are going to. I got it at about ten inches long within a year it was just over two feet.
They do not become used to people at all and the bigger they get the more dangerous they become to have around.
Their very aggressive nature serves them well in the wild but it is not a reptile that should ever be kept by a non-professional. You end up having to get rid of them at a certain size and this is not fair to the animal or the owner.
It is a poor choice for a pet in my experience.

When I was a kid, I went to a grade school that was sponsored by the local zoo, which was one of the top zoos in the world. They built an amazing enclosure in the main entrance that had a huge aviary, a gigantic aquarium, and a reptile enclosure. There were dwarf caimans in the reptile section when I was there, though over the years they’ve changed the exhibits multiple times.

I actually looked on the list for Tennessee, my home state, and according to the TWRA you can actually keep a dwarf caiman without a permit in Tennessee because it was considered a class III animal. You can also keep giraffes, bison, and cassowaries here too because they're in the same category.

As a Herpatologist, I'd say all Crocodilians make great pets if your willing to do the proper research and ensure that the animals have all their needs met.

A friend of mine has a pet Cayman. He has his own room with an indoor pond and warming Lampe. And a very big garden with an outdoor pond.
He is spoiled but very sweet.

Yeah, not _everyone_ wants a weird pet. Reptiles are finicky and tricky to keep alive. I like how easy my cats are. They need food, water, play and cuddles. No weird terrariums, no precise climate management, and they only need a bowl of water, not enough to immerse themselves in. Yup, I'm the cat guy. You can keep the scalies.
