Definitely one of the best tracks ever recorded, a one off that will always sound good and has nothing to compare itself to, an absolute masterpiece.

That "bass didgeridoo" as you call it sounds phenomenal on Vinyl record as it accentuated the record spinning and gives it a lot of texture. LOVE IT!

Back then, we were all found in the kitchen at parties for some reason.

wow, very interesting! I always loved this song - but for a looong time I did not know who the singer was (yes, kidzz, that was before the internet and Shazam) ... thanks for all that background info!

Perhaps it was the twinkle in his eye and the cleft Kirk Douglas chin that was his appeal, but for me it was the synth sound especially that synth 'didgeridoo', the great tag line and the female b-vox that made me buy it and love it still. Talk of quirky? hear the Burocrats b-side.

His Voice is the same and he's barely changed in 40 years.

Still listening in 2024. Me and my other half are now 53 this year. We loved Jona then, and still do so.
Beats the backside out of "Spice Girls", and repulsive "Gangsta Rap" any day.

The thing is, I attended uni as a mature age student - I was about 26 when I entered. Of course armies. We’re a big part of student life - especially if toy were studying any of th ‘humanities’ subjects, as the contact hours weren’t as demanding as the sciences. And yes, the kitchen was the central element of most parties, that after all was where the boozeze was & unless you were dancing, using one of the bedrooms, the only place to hold a conversation. So when this came out (I was in my honours year in 1980), it really was so true!.😊

My new idol. As good and funny as Jonathan Richman, but different.
