wouldn't it be hilarious if your digital cards could still be off-center, or have print lines, etc.

The more exposure to a thing, the better it sells.
My prediction is: within the next 5 years after launch the papercards will sell a lot better because the digital cards are a marketing tool.

Within 10 years the Pokémon company will sell more of both digital and paper cards, with digital cards taking the lead

I for one am excited for this, simply because all of my TGC friends are now distant after my relocation. This will relight that spark (casually) for the gang.

I think this will make the PTCG easier to learn and introduce a new format or two for quick play. I think in turn this will create more interest in the PTCG and actually push more people towards the physical cards too. You'll have millions of online players playing on Pocket and Live (Are they gonna be gameplay compatible?) and then more people will want to go to real, physical tournaments, leagues etc too. Perhaps a quicker version of the game might become more popular than the traditional format.

Agree with most of your take, but I could also see it driving new people towards the physical cards too. A lot of people prefer physical items over digital.

I feel like Pokemon is realizing that a large portion of people don't play the TCG and focus more on collecting/investing. I feel like they created this app for people like me who don't play but love ripping packs and checking out the artwork. Online TCG is more about gameplay as I understand it. This is a gamechanger. It will get more people to start playing the actual game. It will bring cardboard collectors into the NFT space. People will trade their digital cards and pay on Zelle or something. There will be a secondary market of some sort. I wonder if TCG player will start putting values on digital cards? Anyway. You're right. And anyone saying you're not is stuck in the past

Pokemon TCG pocket is a supplementary stream of revenue specifically designed to offset the cost of the entire physical card supply chain. Printing prices are going through the roof every year, highly skilled graphic designers are demanding more money and the Pokemon company can’t increase the price per pack or take cards out of the pack without negatively impacting their bottom dollar. This is why they’re so late to releasing a “mobile” version of their TCG line this is not fan service, it’s all to support their physical division while keeping their main customers happily buying ad nauseaum.

All just depends on how "collectible" the cards/packs are. If you can save up packs rather than being forced to open them immediately upon purchase/earning them I would say that would be a benefit - especially if they are seasonally available/rotating stock. And the cards can be traded without needing to be right next to somebody else's phone. It would be a major success if the cards were tradeable not just for other cards but also money, but I don't think that's what they want from it. People love rolling for CSGO skins though, and that real monetary aspect definitely drives sales.

Pretty sane take tbh. It's all about the money, and PP will make boatloads of it. I'm actually kind of excited to see how sick they can juice those pixels. You know the digital cards are going to look insane, even if it's only on a screen. There's almost no question the future is digital, whether we like it or not. And obviously "printing" digital collectibles is a million times easier than printing physical ones. If you can just make people want them and spend money on them, it's an infinite money glitch because there's unlimited scaling.

One of my biggest questions is just about the game mechanics and just HOW watered down the gameplay will be. Like will it even be possible for this to be competitive in any way, or will the battling be purely casual and non-competitive because it's so simplified? It feels important for there to be some level of competition/ladder/etc for people to really want to go ham on the in-game purchases, but I could be wrong.

Something else I've been thinking about with PP is... will people really want to show off digital cards on social media and stuff? I feel like a huge part of the tcg hobby is people spending way too much money they don't have on cards so they can share photos of them on social media for clout. Will these same show-off principles apply for digital cards? I'm guessing they will, but I wonder if they won't hit the same way. After all, there are a million different ways to capture the light on the texture of your moonbreon in a photo. But once you've seen the digital animation of a card in the Pocket app card once, that's it, you've kinda just seen it all. Either way I'm super interested to see how this actually pans out as time goes on!

I think physical cards would be getting stronger as you can own them personally. Digital…hmm hmm one day Pokémon company want to shut down the online game then they will be gone forever!!!

While I fully believe we're in a digital age now, I also feel like having digital copies of the cards is like having a digital girlfriend. It'll never be the real thing.

I'm a school teacher and Comic book and Pokémon collector. Kids are not reading comic books much. They read Manga and some digital content. Pokemon is getting in touch with the future masses and this will be huge. I sold most of my Comic collection and only invested in Pokemon last year. Dont worry, the school kids will tell you where the money is heading.

I can't wait for all the new digital pack rip content on youtube

I think if it got to a point where the success of this app supassed the TCG Physical, it could potenitally make the real cards go up as they consider switching off the printers for more profit.

Is this comparible with pokemon masters ex?

Let's see if they can be traded... and if they "retire" sets from purchase. Thus making them "collectable" and/or "valuable".

Oh it's gonna be a hit! It will be a hit with anyone who is collecting the cards (alot of people) as well as it will pull in people who are either on the fence or passing interest in it, but haven't taken the dive. It's also smart because it will bring in more sales for the TCG, much like the MTG or Yu-Gi-Oh app have allowed more players into the game. It won't be as big as Pokemon Go was, as that appealed to even non gamers, (my wife does not enjoy most games but it was simple enough even for her to enjoy with me) but it will already click with established audience as well as bring in more new people as it lowers barrier to entry.
