From street peddlers to food masters in hawker centres, hawkers have been feeding Singaporeans for over a century. How did this humble trade become our national culture and part of our DNA?

The series looks at the parallel history between Singapore's development, and the emergence of our hawker culture, with hawkers feeding Singaporeans for over a century to date. Our story starts off with a look at the history, from how early settlers took to the trade, to the urgent construction in the 1970s of our "community dining halls" - the hawker centres.

As Singaporeans, today we are so blessed with almost all kinds of food that are used to be in-store or restaurant. Not any more, you could have a bowl of ramen, mala, Korean, western food in a hawker centre. Thank the hardworking hawkers who run the store and the people who plan and build the hawker centre in the early days.

Another fascinating documentary from CNA Insider. Informatively scripted, well balanced points of view, cleverly animated, and an important subject that sits at the heart of Singapore’s existence. Thoroughly enjoyed watching and learning from this production.

What a great recognition given to this trade. A successful hawker has grit, passion and a desire to keep improving himself and stay competitive. For every successful hawker, there are just as many who did not make it.

As an overseas Singaporean, it’s so true that those of us abroad miss home for the 3 Fs… family, friends, and (hawker) food! And thanks CNA for yet another insightful documentary

I've been going to hawker centres since '81 and I remember them underneath the residents and they were so cheap and the food was so

We moved to SG just for the hawkers. If they disappear, we would be devastated. Outdoor dining is so much easier and more accessible during the pandemic because of hawkers. Stay safe!

We absolutely loved hawkers during our stay. We went to have breakfast daily at a centre called Broadway next to Sim Lim Square. ❤

Hawker culture comes a long way
In the 60s, u sit to be served. Pay after you finish
In the 80s u queue to get food, pay when your food is ready to collect
In the 2000s you queue and pay 1st, then you get a number, your number will be called when the food is ready
In 2020s add on to 2000s plus return trays and utensils after you eat
Maybe in 2040s, you pay and cook for yourself then clean up plus mop the floor before you leave🤣🤣🤣
