Why we discriminate - and how to overcome it

In Stack Exchange, people discriminate against new women users. But they favor experienced women users. Why do people discriminate? Is there a science behind this? It turns out that people discriminate both intentionally and unintentionally. They also discriminate maliciously and in ways that are arguably less malicious. The correct way to overcome discrimination depends on the underlying reasons.

I neither understood why we discriminate nor how to overcome it. Unless saying that being conscious of your bias is how you overcome it, that only works for the subconcious type of discrimination, and probably not in every case, 1 example (the referees) isn't enough. What we need is a way to make people overcome it even when they do it conciously.
